In the upcoming Marvel film titled “Captain America: Brave New World“, Anthony Mackie is poised to assume the role of Captain America completely. However, Mackie has faced criticism in certain circles within the United States. In a recent interview, Mackie expressed that Captain America symbolizes positivity for the global community, and he believes that “America” isn’t necessarily the focus in the character’s title. This statement has sparked outrage among right-wing social media users, leading to Mackie receiving negative comments online. However, director Julius Onah of “Brave New World” has stepped in to support Mackie, stating that his comments were misconstrued.
As a movie enthusiast discussing Anthony Mackie’s recent statements about Captain America, I, Julius Onah, clarified during an interview that there seems to be some confusion among certain groups regarding his intent. I firmly believe that this misunderstanding is rooted in a misinterpretation of what he truly meant.
As for my perspective, I came to this movie with a particular angle in mind, focusing on the theme of community – an aspect I’ve had personal encounters with during my time residing in the United States.
As a movie enthusiast, I find myself reflecting on Anthony Mackie’s words about Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, “He’s a man of his word, honor, dignity, and integrity.” It’s not hard to see how this character has been employed to shed light on the flaws within our nation, both politically and culturally. The series, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, serves as a stark reminder of this.
Director Julius Onah further elaborated on his interpretation of Sam Wilson, aligning with Mackie’s original sentiments.
A point that particularly stood out for me was the concept of empathy, a strength I believe Sam Wilson possesses. In my view, this isn’t merely relevant but extremely significant.
Chris Evans Previously Made Similar “Anti-America” Captain America Comments
The First Avenger, also expressed similar sentiments to CBR, stating “[I’m] not getting too engrossed in the American aspect of it.
Over a decade prior to Mackie portraying the role, Evans expressed a sentiment very much alike regarding how Captain America should symbolize positivity and goodness globally. “I’ve mentioned before in interviews,” Evans added, “it seems more appropriate to simply call him Captain Good.” He clarified that this film isn’t about waving flags, but it just so happens that the character was developed in America during war times when there was a common adversary, despite it being Captain America.
In addition to Anthony Mackie, the upcoming movie “Captain America: Bold Horizon” features Harrison Ford, Liv Tyler, Rosa Salazar, Giancarlo Esposito, Danny Ramirez, and Tim Blake Nelson. The film finds Sam Wilson fully adopting the role of Captain America as a fresh, perilous enemy arises – the Serpent Society. “Captain America: Bold Horizon” hits theaters on Valentine’s Day (February 14).
