During the upcoming Milan Design Week 2025 in April, when the city welcomes a multitude of international attendees alongside the Salone Del Mobile furniture fair, it’s been revealed that acclaimed filmmaker Paolo Sorrentino will serve as one of this year’s distinguished guests.
Renowned for his work such as HBO’s “The Young Pope” (2016) and the 2021 Venice Film Festival Grand Jury Prize winner “The Hand of God” (2021), Sorrentino has revealed plans for a contemplative installation titled “La dolce attesa.” This will be positioned at the entrance to Pavilions 22-24. Regarding the theme, Sorrentino stated, “One of life’s greatest sorrows is waiting. We discuss waiting for test results, for medical updates. When we wait for our destiny, all we can do is endure. When our future hinges on a doctor, on a lab, we simply have to hang in there.
Our waiting area aims to transform into something different. Instead of making you stay put, it encourages movement. It’s like a short journey, similar to how children explore, but on soothing transportation,” he explained further. As per Salone, Sorrentino is planning to collaborate with set designer Margherita Palli, who has worked on over sixty shows in Italy and internationally, for this project.
In a warm invitation, Maria Porro, President of the Salone del Mobile, urges us to engage in an impactful experience that resonates with us all. She explains that this installation is more than just a space; it’s a story told through visuals, sounds, and pauses, reminding us that anticipation is a shared emotion. This sentiment is evident in Sorrentino’s chosen setting – a hospital waiting room – as well as in any other situation where we gauge the world based on waiting, whether at home, work, an airport, or wherever our fate leads us.
