Prior to the “Uncharted” film hitting cinemas in 2022, there were numerous production issues and multiple director swaps. At one point, Seth Gordon was connected to the project, but it was Ruben Fleischer who ultimately took the helm. However, Gordon’s contributions during pre-production played a crucial role in shaping the film as we eventually saw it.
In an interview with Collider, Gordon shared insights about the overlap of his work on the movie and Fleischer’s filmmaking process, a collaboration that was later cut short due to the Sony email leaks. Notably, a team member from Gordon’s 2025 Netflix project also contributed to the 2021 ‘Uncharted’ production. Here is Gordon’s explanation of how much of his original vision made it into the film’s final version:
In an interview, Gordon discussed the connection between his and Fleischer’s work on ‘Uncharted’, which was affected by the Sony email leaks. A person from Gordon’s 2025 Netflix team also worked on the 2021 ‘Uncharted’. Here is what he said about how much of his ideas ended up in the final movie:
To put it simply, a significant amount of the work we had done was included in the final product. My production designer, who also worked on that movie, was involved as well. However, Sony experienced a data breach which affected the version I was working on. Confidential details were leaked and things took a drastic turn. Amy [Hennig] departed, Tom [Holland] joined the project instead, and the entire direction changed.
The Tumultuous Production of ‘Uncharted’ Saw Many Iterations
As a movie enthusiast, I can confidently say that I was genuinely thrilled with the end result when discussing the project. Contrary to any speculations, I held no grudges about no longer being associated with it as it progressed. Interestingly enough, I wasn’t the only director who had plans for Uncharted; several others were also in contention and even signed on before eventually parting ways. The impressive roster of potential directors includes David O. Russell (Amsterdam), Neil Burger (Limitless), me (Seth Gordon), Shawn Levy (Deadpool & Wolverine), Dan Trachtenberg (Prey), and Travis Knight (Bumblebee).
One significant creator who endeavored to breathe life into the ‘Uncharted’ universe was writer and director Joe Carnahan, who shared insights into his script development for the movie and even interacted with Amy Henig, the original creator of the video game series, and Nolan North, the voice behind Nathan Drake across all five titles. Moreover, Carnahan discussed the film’s R-rated approach at the project’s inception before ultimately departing from it. Given that Neil Druckmann mentioned some of Carnahan’s ideas found their way into the final movie, it’s intriguing to ponder the potential impact of other creators like Carnahan on the 2021 adaptation.
Initially, it appeared challenging to launch the movie titled Uncharted. However, the struggles were justified since the film eventually earned a massive $400 million at the box office, making it the sixth highest-grossing adaptation of a video game in history for Sony. Although a sequel is planned for the action-adventure flick, concerns arise due to Tom Holland’s busy schedule over the next year, as he has two eagerly awaited projects on his plate. The Uncharted video games have garnered both critical acclaim and financial success due to their captivating characters and stunning visuals. One can only wish that any future Uncharted films will fully leverage the intriguing mythos established by the video game series.
