However, if you’re in search of a less celebrated family comedy to watch, keep your eyes on this Fox sitcom from the early 2010s.

The sitcom titled “Raising Hope” aired on Fox from 2010 to 2014 for four seasons. It portrayed the daily life struggles of an unmarried young father as he navigated the challenge of raising his baby girl with support from his loving family, who were a typical lower-middle-class bunch striving to make ends meet. Although they weren’t the most stable group of characters, their affection for each other was heartwarming and a delight to watch on television. Despite flying under the radar during its original broadcast, it garnered several award nominations. Lucas Neff portrayed Jimmy Chance, a 23-year-old character. It turns out that after a brief encounter with Lucy, it is revealed that she’s a fugitive serial killer. She is arrested but later found pregnant with Jimmy’s child. Eventually, following the birth, Lucy faces capital punishment through electrocution. This dramatic turn of events unfolds during the initial part of the pilot episode itself. Despite this dark beginning, the show eventually develops into a more heartwarming narrative as it proceeds.

Currently, Jimmy finds himself in a single parenthood role, looking after his daughter Hope. His family includes mother Virginia (portrayed by Martha Plimpton), father Burt (Garret Dillahunt). Being teenage parents themselves, Virginia and Burt became grandparents at relatively young ages. The Chance family, consisting of Jimmy, Virginia, Burt, and their extended family member Maw Maw (Cloris Leachman), live just above the poverty line and work service jobs. Burt maintains a pool and lawn care business, while Virginia cleans houses, and Jimmy works at a grocery store. Their home is owned by Virginia’s grandmother, Maw Maw, who, being 84 and senile, often forgets who they are. As a result, the Chance family lives there rent-free. Sabrina (Shannon Woodward), a co-worker of Jimmy at the local grocery store and an initial love interest, is also part of the main cast.

Why ‘Raising Hope’ Is Worth Watching

From a passionate cinema enthusiast’s perspective, the narrative frequently centers around Jimmy’s persistent efforts to raise Hope better than he was raised by Virginia and Burt, his parents who, let’s face it, were just kids themselves when they became parents. Despite Jimmy’s frequent complaints, it’s evident that this family truly cares for each other deeply. Now, did Virginia and Burt excel at parenting? Not exactly. But they always strived to provide for Jimmy, given their challenging circumstances. Through thick and thin, they were there for him. And here’s the interesting part: despite his past as a slacker, Jimmy managed to transform his life and take on the responsibility of caring for his daughter. Remarkably, against all odds, the Chance family remains solid, with serious disputes being rare and problems tackled collectively.

It’s likely that Jimmy is the most mature member of the family due to his parents’ playful, childlike demeanor, stemming from not having had the opportunity to experience their own childhood. While their youthful behavior can sometimes be a drawback if it leads to negligence, since they are devoted caregivers, their inability to lose the zest for life is heartwarming. Although no one is overjoyed with their circumstances, these are the hands they’ve been dealt, and they will remain united as a family.

Beyond being simply funny, “Raising Hope” is a hilarious sitcom that originates from creator Greg Garcia, who is also responsible for bringing “My Name is Earl” into existence. The humor in this series is largely derived from Jimmy’s sweet yet clueless approach to raising a baby in today’s world. Maw Maw also provides plenty of laughter, whether she’s confusing Jimmy and Burt with her deceased husband, experiencing hallucinations, or believing she’s back in World War II. In later seasons, the depiction of Maw Maw’s dementia is reduced to show respect for those who truly suffer from this condition.

The Chances frequently use humor based on situations that involve them jokingly mocking people who have more wealth and social status than they do. However, their jokes at each other’s expense are always friendly in nature. It’s refreshing to watch a show where no one is truly the villain. Each member of the family strives for improvement, despite having their flaws. It’s a fantastic family comedy and definitely worth revisiting.
