In a notable climb up Hulu’s rankings, the first movie by filmmaker Caitlin Cronenberg, daughter of renowned horror auteur David Cronenberg, titled “Humane“, has found its stride. As of now, it holds the third spot on the charts. Despite its release in April 2024 and subsequent appearance on Shudder in July that same year, the film initially flew under the radar. However, it appears that the overlooked movie is finally receiving the recognition it deserves on Hulu.
In a parallel universe version of Canada, the global climate catastrophe has led governments worldwide to implement a lethal campaign, aimed at reducing Earth’s human population by 20%. The story revolves around the York family, who have grown apart, reuniting under the guidance of their father Charles. He shares an unexpected revelation that sets the stage for a harrowing night filled with unexpected twists and turns.
The film boasts an impressive ensemble cast, featuring Jay Baruchel from “Blackberry” and “This is the End”, Emily Hampshire known for “Schitt’s Creek” and “12 Monkeys”, Peter Gallagher of “House on Haunted Hill” and “Short Cuts”, Enrico Colantoni starring in “Veronica Mars” and “Contagion”, Sebastian Chacon from “Daisy Jones and the Six”, Alanna Bale recognized for “Cardinal”, Uni Park popular in “Kim’s Convenience”. Notably, Cronenberg’s father also lends his voice for a cameo.
Michael Sparaga penned the script, having previously produced and directed the documentary titled “United We Fan“, which delves into the history of fan letter campaigns to save popular shows such as Star Trek, Quantum Leap, and Arrested Development. In addition, he authored the 2011 comedy “Servitude“, which features performances by Dave Foley and Margot Kidder.
‘Humane’s Cast and Crew Fell in Love with the Script Immediately
The film titled “Humane” boasts a respectable Rotten Tomatoes critical rating of 71%, based on 56 reviews. According to Jonathan DeHaan from Nightmare on Film Street, “Humane is an impressive debut for director Caitlin Cronenberg, skillfully blending humor and chilling concepts“. Meagan Navarro’s review for Bloody-Disgusting praises the movie, describing it as “a gripping chamber piece with a captivating cast that delivers a darkly humorous and engaging narrative while maintaining straightforwardness“.
During an interview with MovieWeb, director Cronenberg expressed instant attraction towards Sparaga’s screenplay.
I found the central concept of this work truly captivating. What intrigued me most was envisioning this alternate reality as if it were our current world. I’ve never encountered anything quite like it before, and I was drawn in by the contrast between the chaos outside and the strong family bonds within. This dynamic resonated deeply with me.
In simpler terms, Baruchel shared similar thoughts, explaining that the compelling storyline – one that he found had meaningful messages – and the intriguing character he was set to portray were the main reasons he became involved in the project.
Humane is currently streaming on Hulu.
