I am deeply saddened and bewildered by the omission of Shelley Duvall from this year’s Emmys In Memoriam segment. As a devoted fan who grew up watching her extraordinary performances, I can’t help but feel a sense of disbelief. Her portrayal of Wendy Torrance in The Shining is etched into my memory, and her nominations for Tall Tales & Legends and Shelley Duvall’s Bedtime Stories are testaments to her undeniable talent.
At this year’s Emmy Awards, the In Memoriam segment honored many cherished actors, writers, and creatives who passed away, except for Shelley Duvall, a previous Emmy nominee. Amidst the excitement as top-tier shows receive their well-deserved recognition from peers, the In Memoriam section serves as a poignant pause, allowing us to reflect on the talented individuals in our industry who are no longer with us. This year’s performance of “I Am Not Okay” by Jelly Roll added an emotional depth to the tribute. Names such as Richard Simmons, Shannen Doherty, James Earl Jones, the late James Earl Jones, and Gen V star Chance Perdomo were among those remembered. However, Duvall, along with some other notable figures, was not included in the remembrance.
Known primarily for her role in “The Shining,” Shelley Duvall was surprisingly nominated for two Primetime Emmys throughout her career. Her first nomination arrived in 1988 for the children’s series “Tall Tales & Legends.” Four years later, she received a second nod for the animated program “Shelley Duvall’s Bedtime Stories.” The fact that she had previously been recognized by the Emmys has left some of her fans puzzled by her omission from this year’s In Memoriam segment. Tragically, Shelley Duvall passed away this July at the age of 75.
Besides Shelley Duvall, several other popular TV personalities, such as Chita Rivers from “Will & Grace”, Johnny Wactor of “General Hospital”, Tyler Christopher also from “General Hospital”, and director Eleanor Coppola, were conspicuously absent from the tribute segment. Instead, they were all included in a comprehensive list on the Emmys website.
Fans React to Shelley Duvall’s In Memoriam Absence
Despite the constant growth of the entertainment industry, it’s unavoidable that not every departed industry professional who has passed away within the past year can be recognized. Nevertheless, fans find it hard to fathom how the Emmys overlooked such a cherished star and previous Emmy nominee, Shelley Duvall, in this year’s list. Social media platforms are abuzz with disappointed fans, criticizing the awards show for overlooking Shelley and expressing their appreciation for her contributions to the industry through various tributes.
“Oh, dear Shelley Duvall, your time for recognition is coming. We won’t let you be forgotten. #Emmys #Emmys2024” was posted by @BRITLENAPOP. Social media echoed with similar sentiments following the segment. @ecrga highlighted Duvall’s television presence, expressing surprise that the awards overlooked the actress. They wrote:
Instead of creating, producing, and presenting numerous well-received and adored children’s shows that were even Emmy-nominated, Shelley Duvall made these successful productions. This year, unfortunately, the Emmys did not acknowledge her in their memorial tribute, so I will.
It’s disappointing that Chita Rivera was overlooked in the Emmys In Memoriam segment, as she graced numerous TV shows like Will & Grace, The Outer Limits, Dora The Explorer, Mayflower Madam, and a multitude of others including Carol Burnett/Judy Garland/Dick Van Dyke/Ed Sullivan/Mike Douglas/Tonight Show.
