As a seasoned cinephile with over three decades of movie-watching under my belt, I must admit that the news of not one but two Predator movies in 2025 has me positively giddy! Having grown up on the original Arnold Schwarzenegger classic and following each new entry with bated breath, this double dose of extraterrestrial hunting action is music to my ears.
It appears there’s much anticipation for two new installments of the Predator series in 2025, one hitting theaters and one available on streaming platforms. Not long ago, it was officially announced that “Predator: Badlands” would claim the November 7, 2025 release date previously reserved by Disney for “Blade.” This post-apocalyptic movie is under the direction of Dan Trachtenberg, who has previously worked on the Hulu prequel titled “Prey,” and stars Elle Fanning. Additionally, this film will bring the franchise back to the big screen following the direct-to-streaming release of “Prey.
As a cinephile eagerly anticipating the return of the iconic Predator to the big screen, I can’t help but feel intrigued by the news that not one, but two Predator movies are set to grace us in 2025. In an exclusive chat with The Hollywood Reporter, Steve Asbell, President of 20th Century Studios, shared this tantalizing tidbit.
“After ‘Prey’ was a hit, Dan Trachtenberg expressed his unwillingness to make ‘Prey 2’. Instead, he proposed several unique and exciting ideas. We’ve already brought two of these to life. One is still under wraps, but the other one is the upcoming live-action ‘Predator’ film featuring Elle Fanning, which was recently completed in New Zealand. It’s set for a theatrical release sometime next year.
It appears that many are assuming the upcoming Predator film is titled “Prey 2”. Contrary to what Asbell stated, director Trachtenberg initially expressed no interest in directing “Prey 2”, but earlier this year, both “Predator: Badlands” and this supposed sequel were confirmed to be in development. Interestingly enough, it was also announced that Trachtenberg would helm “Prey 2”. Given the success of “Prey” on Hulu, it seems plausible for a follow-up or closely related film to continue as a streaming production. This situation mirrors Trachtenberg’s original intention for “Prey”, which was to maintain secrecy about its Predator connection until after its release. However, just like with “Prey”, the surprise has unfortunately been revealed prematurely.
Is the Secret Movie a New Alien vs. Predator?
It’s intriguing to consider the sequence of events leading up to the release of the Predator movie on a streaming platform compared to Predator: Badlands, and the duration of their respective marketing campaigns. Could 20th Century Studios follow the unexpected strategy of the Cloverfield Paradox by airing a Super Bowl ad for an unannounced simultaneous release? They might choose to reveal Predator: Badlands at a major Predator panel during next summer’s Comic-Con, allowing fans a sneak peek before the new Predator film premieres on Hulu.
The 20th Century seems optimistic about the Predator series, hinting at possible plans to revisit the Alien vs. Predator concept. Asbell mentioned that if a new Alien vs. Predator were to happen, it wouldn’t follow the traditional format, suggesting a more organic approach rather than a direct sequel or remake of the original films. It appears that any potential crossovers could be on the horizon, and given the scale of Alien vs. Predator, a big-screen release seems likely. However, the Predator film being developed for streaming is unlikely to be this, but rather a new crossover story might emerge soon. With Predator: Badlands confirmed to occur in the future, it could pave the way for a future Alien: Romulus crossover in an upcoming Alien vs. Predator film.
