Disney+ Just Canceled Another Show After One Season, And Streaming Shows Are Dropping Like Flies

As a dedicated gamer and avid streaming enthusiast, I’ve seen my fair share of exciting new shows getting canceled before they even reach their full potential. And it seems that 2024 is no exception to this disappointing trend. The latest victim of the streaming cancelation wave is Disney+’s fantasy series “Renegade Nell.”

Halfway through the year 2024, and already several shows have been concluded or canceled. Surprisingly, a significant number of these series are streaming productions. Despite numerous renewals, it seems that at least one streamed show gets terminated each week. Recently, Disney+ announced another one-season show as being canceled.

1. The British fantasy series “Renegade Nell,” created by Sally Wainwright and set in a magical 18th-century England, has unfortunately been terminated after just one season. In the show, Louisa Harland portrays Nell Jackson, wrongly accused of murder and transforming into a notorious outlaw. With the aid of a mystical sprite, she uncovers her true purpose. The cast also included Frank Dillane, Alice Kremelberg, Enyi Okoronkwo, Pip Torrens, and Nick Mohammed, who were seen alongside Harland from their roles in “Derry Girls.”

Disney+ Just Canceled Another Show After One Season, And Streaming Shows Are Dropping Like Flies

As a dedicated fan, I eagerly watched “Renegade Nell” when it debuted on Disney+ last March. Unfortunately, from what I’ve gathered, the show didn’t manage to hit the necessary metrics for renewal. In today’s entertainment world, two key factors seem crucial for a series’ survival: financial backing and viewership. It seems that “Renegade Nell” might not have garnered the viewership needed to secure a second season.

1. Although the show was canceled, it boasts an impressive 87% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an 88% audience score, making it challenging to deny its popularity. As confirmed by a representative from Disney, the cancellation indeed took place, according to Deadline.

1. “Disney+’s original series, ‘Renegade Nell,’ will not be renewed for a second season. We’re extremely proud of the universe crafted by Sally Wainwright and lead director Ben Taylor. A big thank you goes out to them, our production partners at Lookout Point, the talented cast, especially Louisa Harland, and crew for their outstanding contributions to this series. We look forward to collaborating with them again in future projects.”

1. Dealing with the frequent cancellations of streaming shows is becoming increasingly difficult, especially for those that air just one season. For instance, this year, Max canceled “The Girls on the Bus,” a political drama starring Melissa Benoist. Similarly, Disney-owned Hulu axed “Death and Other Details,” featuring Mandy Patinkin, after only one season. Likewise, Netflix recently terminated “Obliterated” following a single run of episodes.

Unfortunately, many of these shows don’t have the opportunity to fully develop their narratives as they often only last for around 10 episodes or less before being cancelled. Although we understand that streaming platforms like Netflix abandoning the pilot model leads to this outcome, it doesn’t make it any easier to accept.

At present, it remains uncertain whether creator Sally Wainwright and production studio Lookout Point are planning to offer the series “Renegade Nell” to other platforms. Given its promising reception and engaging plotline, it’s disappointing that it was discontinued. Regrettably, it seems inevitable that “Renegade Nell” won’t be the only one-season show to get canceled by a streaming service. For now, we can only hope that our favorite shows don’t suffer the same fate and cross our fingers as we anxiously wait for updates.

On the positive note, Disney+ subscribers can anticipate an abundance of fresh content coming their way. This includes Disney+’s initial “Doctor Who” spin-off and the second installment of “Ahsoka,” along with numerous other titles. If you’re interested, feel free to watch the solitary season of “Renegade Nell” to form your own opinion about the show.
