As a dedicated streamer follower, I enforced a password-sharing restriction back in 2024 to ensure that subscribers could only enjoy their preferred content within the confines of their homes or on a limited number of occasions away from home through the “Away” exception. However, it appears this change has brought about quite a hassle for some users, as a system glitch is causing confusion by erroneously labeling them as being “Away” when they are actually at home.
It’s not surprising that such complaints can quickly escalate, and with some users claiming they were unexpectedly logged out of their accounts while still connected to their home internet network, it’s no wonder frustrated customers are threatening to cancel their subscription and calling for action against this issue.
Many people using Disney+ haven’t encountered any issues, but some users have run into a problem that requires discussion on Reddit. The problem seems to be that users are receiving a message saying they’ve exhausted their “I’m Away” requests, even when they’re at home or watching in the same household. This issue also affects people who are moving homes. As one user put it:
Four months ago, I changed residences, and about twice a week, I receive these messages. I repeatedly click on ‘Update Household,’ and when that stops functioning, I resort to the ‘I’m away.’ When that option fails too, I’m forced to reach out to Disney+ for assistance, and they manage to solve the issue – only for it to resurface again, leaving me in a continuous cycle. I’ve had to contact Disney Support three times now, and each time they promise it won’t happen again, but unfortunately, it persists.
It’s clear that this problem causes significant annoyance for those affected, and the usual reaction is to ask for action to be taken to fix it or else cancellations will ensue. So far, Disney has provided no explanation as to why the issue is happening, but a team of tech-minded staff are working diligently to find a resolution. However, this doesn’t seem to satisfy those who keep getting logged out of their accounts.
Password Sharing Crack-Downs Became Common in 2024
Last year, numerous streaming services implemented stricter rules against password sharing, requiring multiple users to reside under one roof to share an account. Although there were many complaints prior to these changes, Netflix reported during their quarterly financial discussions that the number of subscribers had significantly grown following these restrictions.
This doesn’t imply that everyone was satisfied with the circumstances, since families often found it inconvenient when unable to access a service they had paid for while away from home, especially those with young children who wanted to watch their preferred shows and films. To accommodate such users, some streaming platforms still enable viewing content under certain restrictions, allowing users to stream via their registered home internet network within a specific timeframe.
Just as technological systems sometimes encounter issues like glitches, so too has this situation arisen for those impacted. Even in the absence of a specific bug, there’s been dissatisfaction among some users regarding Disney’s efforts to restrict streaming to within the home. One individual succinctly expressed their feelings:
It can be quite frustrating that Disney Plus seems to focus on family content. This becomes a problem when we want to watch our preferred shows while the kids are at Grandma’s.
The idea of removing restrictions on password sharing among viewers seems unlikely for any streaming service, as they firmly believe in upholding their rules for viewing content. This approach might not be pleasing to some consumers, but it doesn’t appear to be hurting their subscriber numbers significantly, suggesting that this issue may not keep them awake at night concerning financial losses.
