Disney World Finally Found A Use For A Long Defunct Location, And It Looks A Lot Like What They Closed In The First Place

In the upcoming years, Disney World is set to introduce numerous new attractions, making it quite challenging to keep up with all the changes. Each of its four parks currently has or will soon have major construction underway. What’s more interesting is a unique addition to Disney World that you won’t find within the parks themselves.

The shopping and dining hub at Walt Disney World, Disney Springs, offers a variety of entertainment options, with Drawn to Life, an exclusive Cirque Di Soleil show, being one of the highlights. Now, it seems another entertainment venture, Level 99 – an interactive gaming concept that currently operates in two locations on the East Coast – is planning to set up shop at Disney Springs.

As for its location within Disney Springs, it’s expected to be in the spot previously occupied by Disney’s own interactive gaming space.

Level 99 Looks A Lot Like DisneyQuest

As a movie enthusiast, I’d put it like this: “Step into Level 99, where I find myself immersed in an extraordinary world of over 50 brain-teasing puzzles and adrenaline-pumping activities, all set against stunning artistic backdrops. It’s not just about winning; you can compete or collaborate with others to bring out the best in your gaming skills. While this interactive gaming experience at Disney Springs is new to me, I know that innovative entertainment isn’t alien to this legendary destination.

1998 saw the unveiling of DisneyQuest at Walt Disney World. This was an innovative, interactive virtual theme park that combined VR, AR attractions with classic arcade games. The inspiration for all these games came from popular Disney movies and theme park rides. The plan was to extend this concept beyond Disney parks, but only one location in Chicago ever saw the light of day. Unfortunately, it shut down just two years later.

When it became evident that DisneyQuest wouldn’t expand much beyond its initial concept, Disney World leaders seemed to gradually lose enthusiasm for upkeeping the original attraction. The existing features saw little innovation, yet enthusiasts of the idea mostly sustained it.

Up until the year 2017, when DisneyQuest was officially shut down, park visitors expressed disappointment. Their dissatisfaction deepened upon seeing what took its place instead.

The NBA Experience Was A Rare Disney World Flop

During the summer of 2019, the NBA Experience made its debut. This new venue shared some resemblance with DisneyQuest but offered exclusive basketball-themed activities for visitors. Despite initial excitement, attendance at the NBA Experience remained relatively low. Unfortunately, just as things were beginning to pick up, a global pandemic occurred.

The NBA Experience shut down just under a year after its debut, due to the pandemic. A year later, Disney World and the NBA decided not to reopen it permanently. Since then, the structure has been mostly vacant, hosting occasional temporary residents, but no long-term tenants.

As I stood amidst the now-silent halls of DisneyQuest, a pang of nostalgia washed over me. If another gaming company manages to captivate audiences at Disney Springs with their interactive product, I can’t help but wonder if Disney was too hasty in closing down the original gem. Could Level 99 possibly deliver a virtual experience that transports younger generations back to the magic of DisneyQuest? Only time will tell, but I can’t help but hope so.
