As a gamer with over two decades of Disney movie marathons under my belt, I can confidently say that the news of Moana 2 and the live-action Moana is like striking gold in a virtual world! The visual sneak peeks are as thrilling as leveling up to a new character in my favorite games.
Enthusiasts of Disney’s “Moana” have good reason to be thrilled, as “Moana 2” is set to premiere in cinemas next week. However, the excitement doesn’t stop there for devoted fans, as a live-action version of “Moana” is also planned in Disney’s future film lineup. Interestingly, this movie is currently being filmed in Hawaii.
While we won’t see the live-action Moana until 2026, Disney Studios co-chief Alan Bergman did share one exciting sneak peek. He posted an image to Instagram of himself with Maui’s iconic fish hook. The prop looks perfect. The version from the animated movie has been made real and it’s incredible.

Despite its impressive appearance, I’m eagerly anticipating how it will transform with Dwayne Johnson in his role. He’ll once again lend his voice to the demigod Maui in live-action. Even more so than the animated version, this seems oversized relative to Dwayne Johnson’s stature. Yet, I’m eagerly counting down the days for The Rock to hold it.
The most effective Disney live-action adaptations have stuck closest to the original stories. Glancing at the film’s visuals, it appears they’re aiming for a strong resemblance to the original version. It’s looking likely that this movie will closely mirror its animated counterpart. They aren’t even creating new versions of the props. (Paraphrased)
Given Disney’s successful run with live-action adaptations, it was almost inevitable that we’d see a remake of “Moana”. What’s surprising is how swiftly this is happening, considering that “Moana” is barely a decade old. Unlike the other films that have undergone remakes thus far, which are generally older and widely regarded as classics, “Moana” is quite recent.

Despite not yet reaching its full potential, the Disney franchise of Moana continues to expand rapidly, as evidenced by its upcoming stage show on Disney’s latest cruise ship and recent addition at Disney World. Given this pace, it appears that a live-action remake of Frozen may be forthcoming soon, even though the animated series still has much more to offer, with two Frozen movies currently in production and Frozen 3 slated for release in 2027.
One advantage of remaking the film so quickly after the original version is that it allows the new production to recruit one of the original stars, a feat rarely accomplished except for James Earl Jones reprising his role as Mufasa in the Lion King remake. Most of the cast in Moana are newcomers, but it’s hard to envision anyone other than Dwayne Johnson wielding Maui’s enchanted fish hook. We’ll have the opportunity to witness this when the movie premieres in 2026.
