For over a century, the Walt Disney Company has brought to life many beloved characters, with Mickey Mouse undeniably leading the pack in terms of success. However, prior to Mickey, there was another character that isn’t as well-known: Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. This charming rabbit was actually the first creation of Walt Disney, and it seems he is set for a return after almost a century.
Previously this week, news broke out about a Disney+ animated series centered around Tiana from The Princess and the Frog, but as of today, Deadline has announced a different animated character who will star in their own show instead. It’s said that Jon Favreau is working on the new project, which will blend animation with live-action for an exciting twist.
As a cinema enthusiast, I find it intriguing that the creators have decided to center a fresh series around a character who’s close to a century old, someone not as widely recognized by many viewers. Remarkably, this isn’t the first time a new series featuring Oswald has been suggested, and I strongly believe it’s due to Disney CEO Bob Iger’s deep affection for Oswald that such a project is being pursued.
Bob Iger Brought Oswald Back To Disney
The tale of Oswald the Lucky Rabbit represents the origin story of none other than Mickey Mouse. In the 1920s, Walt Disney and his animation partner Ub Iwerks crafted the appearance and style of this character. However, Universal Studios owned him, as the Disney Brothers Studio was under contract with them at that time. A dispute over power eventually led to Walt losing Oswald, prompting him to create a new character – who would later be known as Mickey Mouse.
In an unusual turn of events, decades after, Disney CEO Bob Iger would strike a deal with NBC (Universal-owned at the time) in one of Hollywood’s most peculiar transactions. This deal involved swapping Al Michaels’ contract, among other things, for the rights to Oswald the Lucky Rabbit and all the original cartoons created by Walt Disney and his animators.
Special Offer: Disney Plus and Hulu Bundle$10.99 per month $2.99 per Month for 4 Months – Save 72%
This amazing deal from last year is back, arriving 9 months early in March of 2025! The incredibly popular Disney Plus bundle offer that was a hit during Black Friday returns, providing an ad-supported Disney Plus and Hulu plan for only $2.99 per month. Normally priced at $10.99 per month, this means a significant savings of 72%.
While new and returning eligible customers won’t be able to take advantage of the lower rate for as long, you can still enjoy the under-$3 bundle for the initial four months of your subscription (during Black Friday, the reduced Disney Plus price lasted an entire year).

What prompted Bob Iger’s action was his commitment to a pledge made to Walt Disney’s daughter. When Oswald returned to Disney, Diane Disney Miller commented…
When Bob became CEO, he shared with me his intention to rehire Oswald for Disney, and I admire him for being true to his words.
As much as I admire Bob Iger, it’s no secret that Oswald was one of his favorites. From gracing the screens of the “Epic Mickey” video game and its sequel, to adorning various merchandise, Oswald has made quite an impact. You can even spot him regularly at Disney’s California Adventure in the parks.
Iger Gave The Greenlight to An Oswald Series Once Already
However, it’s important to note that the new Disney+ series about Oswald isn’t the only attempt at bringing this character to life. In fact, as early as 2021, there were already plans for another Oswald the Lucky Rabbit series on Disney+. It was reportedly Bob Iger who strongly supported this idea.
Despite the fact that the project disintegrated, it’s uncertain why this occurred, as Bob Iger had already stepped down as CEO when we discovered the project was defunct. At that moment, the role had been taken over by Bob Chapek. However, Iger is now back in the CEO position and a new Oswald series is in its early stages of production. Whether it’s a coincidence or not, I find it hard to believe.
As a follower with a passion for Disney history, particularly Oswald, I’m thrilled about this upcoming series. However, I can’t help but harbor some doubts – will it truly materialize? With Bob Iger stepping down from Disney by the end of 2026, there’s a chance that the driving force behind Oswald might depart as well, opening up possibilities for any changes to occur.
