The movie might have received numerous praise straight after its initial screening, but it appears that some critics have been holding onto their critical remarks for the film’s Rotten Tomatoes debut. As we approach this weekend’s global premiere, the problematic Disney live-action retelling has garnered a “rotten throughout” score on the review platform.
In a recent premiere in Hollywood, Snow White faced a subdued welcome due to concerns that the political views of its principal actors and the debate surrounding the film’s CGI dwarves might eclipse the movie, leading to an influx of unfavorable reviews. These apprehensions seem to have materialized, with demonstrations at the red carpet event by little people, and the film’s initial critiques being less than impressive. Furthermore, speculation about one of Disney’s weakest opening weekends for a live-action adaptation is adding fuel to the fire, suggesting that Snow White may struggle to make an impact.
What Are Critics Saying About ‘Snow White’?
The movie was initially met with a 45% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and received numerous negative reviews. Critic Adam Nayman from the Toronto Star implies that Disney seems to have lost their enchantment in crafting their new live-action remake, stating that “Marc Webb’s film lacks any sense of magic, but it still manages to feel eerie; investing $250 million into a production where nothing functions correctly is a peculiar art form in its own right.
Tara Brady from the Irish Times criticized the movie for several aspects, including the use of CGI dwarfs and more, echoing a broader worry about the film’s live-action adaptation. In her words, “The most noticeable issues stem from the challenging transformation of animated elements into real life… The continuous magic-hour lighting is harsh on the eyes. Most troubling, though, is the choice to make the dwarves resemble cartoons alongside human actors, which creates significant problems.
While Jacob Oller from The AV Club wasn’t particularly fond of the movie overall, he did acknowledge a standout performance – Rachel Zegler. In his words:
“Despite my feelings about the film, there was one undeniable bright spot that has been repeatedly commended: Rachel Zegler.
This film has an unusual perspective, with its success stemming from both its elegance and beauty. However, despite any confusion or disorder, the talent of the radiant singer Rachel Zegler remains evident throughout.
The noteworthy aspect of these reviews is that even those who didn’t give a “bad” rating, struggle to find much praise for the movie overall. Some acknowledge that Gadot fits well as the Evil Queen and Zegler has strong singing abilities (which we are already aware of), but few have been able to call it a “good” film, merely average. Whether audiences share this sentiment this weekend will influence the movie’s success in cinemas. Given current public opinion, it seems that Snow White‘s debut on Disney+ might be its saving grace.
