Do Fans Have to Wait Until 2027 for Naughty Dog’s Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet?

As a dedicated gamer myself, I’m eagerly waiting for more from Naughty Dog on the next installment of “The Last of Us,” but here’s some exciting news: Neil Druckmann, the mastermind behind it, has revealed his upcoming project titled “Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.” In this new adventure, I’ll be stepping into the shoes of Jordan, skillfully portrayed by Tati Gabrielle. Can’t wait to see what the future holds!

Initially, when Intergalactic was announced for release this year, many fans anticipated that it wouldn’t come out until late 2025 or early 2026. However, it appears that this isn’t going to happen as planned.

The Heretic Prophet

As per game journalist Jason Schreier, shared via @CultureCrave, the release of Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet has been delayed beyond 2026. This implies that gamers will have to exercise patience for approximately one and a half years before they can get their hands on this game.

It’s somewhat puzzling why ND would announce something so early before the release date, given that it’s been a while since The Last of Us Part II came out. However, considering PlayStation might be eager to demonstrate that Naughty Dog hasn’t been idle, it could be that they wanted to reveal something to keep fans excited and engaged.

It’s been suggested that the development of Intergalactic might have been the factor preventing the creation of a multiplayer game for The Last of Us, as Naughty Dog found themselves in a position where they had to prioritize either working on an ongoing live-service game or bringing forth this new intellectual property instead.

What’s Intergalactic Going to be about?

At present, details about the narrative of “Intergalactic” are being kept under wraps by Naughty Dog, however, creator Neil Druckmann has expressed an interest in exploring themes such as faith, religion, and solitude within the game. During a recent interview, Druckmann shared this intention.

I’ve been yearning to create a game that explores themes of faith and solitude. Unlike our past projects where there’s usually a companion character, I want this experience to immerse you in a world shrouded in mystery. You should feel lost, questioning the people, their history, and the fate of this strange planet. This planet has been silent for 600 years; if you ever dreamt of leaving, you must unravel the secrets of its past to have that chance.

The narrative unfolds in a revised timeframe, with space exploration becoming a reality during the 1980s. Our main character, Jordan, is a bounty hunter on a mission to track down Kumail Nanjiani’s character. In an unexpected twist, she gets stranded on a planet that was once home to a peculiar cult.

Intergalactic and The Last of Us

Naughty Dog is venturing into the realm of science fiction for the first time with their new game, Intergalactic, as their previous works like Uncharted and The Last of Us primarily focused on different genres. While their earlier titles such as Crash Bandicoot, Jak, and Daxter did incorporate elements of science fiction, they were more cartoonish in nature.

I’d certainly appreciate it if Intergalactic turned out to be a worthwhile delay. Given Neil Druckmann’s suggestion that The Last of Us Part III might not materialize, he must have a great deal of confidence in this venture for him to commit Ellie to it for several years ahead.

At least there’s still the TV series on Max.

There’s no confirmed launch date yet for “Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet“, however, whispers suggest that it might appear on PlayStation platforms around the year 2027.
