As a seasoned gamer and comic book enthusiast with over two decades of immersing myself in the fantastical worlds of Marvel, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and anticipation upon hearing about the upcoming Fantastic Four: First Steps, set to release in July 2025. The costumes have always been a crucial aspect of these films, with past adaptations often falling short in recreating some of the more complex characters like The Thing and the Human Torch.
Despite Robert Downey Jr.’s return to the MCU being a significant highlight, details about the costumes the cast of “Fantastic Four: First Steps” will don when the movie premieres in July 2025 were also shared during the Comic-Con Hall H panel.
It’s well-known that costuming plays a crucial role in shaping a movie’s success, particularly those based on surreal concepts. The previous Fantastic Four films struggled with the challenging aspects of costume design, such as The Thing’s rocky exterior and the Human Torch’s fire effects. However, it appears that technology has alleviated these issues in the new film, First Steps.
For Ebon Moss Bachrach, who is taking on the role of The Thing, it appears that he’s quite content with his character’s wardrobe (or lack thereof). In a chat following a panel discussion with MTV, both Bachrach and his co-star Joseph Quinn were inquired about their costume fittings and if they had any second thoughts about joining the film. Bachrach was quick to express his satisfaction with his character’s attire, commending it by saying:
Indeed, I’ve been quite content with my life decisions. I’m decked out in what appears to be a motion-capturing outfit, and it feels incredibly comfy. I believe I’ve won this attire contest, if I’m not mistaken.
Instead of making a real-life suit for The Fantastic Four characters as previous films did, Director Matt Shakman is opting to use computer-generated imagery (CGI) to animate The Thing in this production. Bachrach appears quite excited about this shift.
Regrettably, Joseph Quinn from “Stranger Things,” much like other characters, isn’t receiving the same CGI makeover as Bachrach. However, this decision hasn’t caused any remorse for him accepting the legendary role previously played by Chris Evans as the Human Torch. In fact, Quinn appears to be overjoyed with the appearance they’ve developed for his portrayal of the character.
- Joseph Quinn: Yes, he looks very comfortable. I wasn’t regretting too many of my life choices. We’ve put together some pretty strong looks. I think, yeah… Yes, of course [I look good in the mirror].
- Ebon Moss Bachrach: Well, Joe’s got his top off for like, 75 percent of the movie.
- Quinn: Yeah, Ebon wrote on that rewrite.
The upcoming superhero movie, eagerly awaited by fans, hadn’t started filming when the interview was conducted, but Bachrach and Quinn were already joking around with each other easily. This suggests a good chemistry between them for the film, which is set to explore the familial relationships within the team rather than retelling an origin story again.
As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled to share that Bachrach and Quinn form half of the remarkable core team. They’ll be accompanied by Pedro Pascal and Vanessa Kirby, whose Comic-Con moment went viral! This fantastic quartet will also include Julia Garner as The Silver Surfer and Ralph Ineson as Galactus, with several others joining in too.
Fans will have to exercise some patience before they can witness the Fantastic Four costumes on the silver screen. However, if Marvel delivers as expected, it’ll be a wait well worth it. This is crucial because the superhero team is set to make appearances in both “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars.” Essentially, Marvel needs to hit a home run with the Fantastic Four as their performance will significantly impact these upcoming Avengers sagas.
