As a devoted fan of “Doctor Odyssey,” it’s tough not to feel adrift at the moment. The rookie medical drama is currently ABC’s only show whose future remains uncertain amidst the 2025 TV schedule. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that the creative discussions with Ryan Murphy will result in Joshua Jackson and Phillipa Soo’s series avoiding cancellation this year, as I’m eagerly anticipating Season 2, and it seems the cast is also on board for more.
Ever since Joshua Jackson’s performance in “The Mighty Ducks,” I’ve been a fan, and it’s been enjoyable watching him star in ABC’s new drama. Given that my family has re-watched Disney+’s “Hamilton” an estimated 50 billion times, I’ve also appreciated seeing Phillipa Soo in a fresh role. Hopefully, “Doctor Odyssey” gets renewed for Season 2, as I’m eager for a musical episode set at sea. It appears that Soo is on board with the idea too, as she mentioned to The Wrap:
I have a strong affection for musicals. Not only do I love them, but I also appreciate how much others adore them as well. Our production team seems to have an inherent sense of musicality, and we all worked hard to keep the atmosphere lively, often using songs to express our feelings. Therefore, I am fully supportive of this. We’ve had some fantastic actors, both from theater and music backgrounds, on the show. I believe that incorporating a Broadway-style episode would make our program even more enchanting.
Besides Phillipa Soo, who boasts more than a dozen theater roles beyond Hamilton, Joshua Jackson and Don Johnson have dabbled in stage work as well. In the ‘80s, Don Johnson even had a music career. With the star-studded cast that Doctor Odyssey has assembled, this seems like an obvious choice.
A variety of celebrities have been linked to “Doctor Odyssey’s” baby excitement, including Shania Twain, country music artist Kelsea Ballerini who is also a coach on “The Voice”, Chord Overstreet from “Glee”, Tony-nominated Broadway actor Tom McGowan, Cheyenne Jackson, and John Stamos, among others. The list continues to grow.
Phillipa Soo said singing is already a part of the cast’s process, as she continued:
On the set, we often compose impromptu songs to help us recall complex medical terminology. There’s typically background music during setup, contributing to an energetic atmosphere. I consider myself fortunate to have been part of such a lively, upbeat, and cheerful production environment.
It’s not just her opinion that Doctor Odyssey might join the ranks of shows with exceptional musical episodes. In discussions about potentially collaborating with additional ABC series following their crossover with 9-1-1, Joshua Jackson mentioned a few possibilities such as Glee, along with Grotesquerie and Feud. However, he ultimately suggested:
And we’re going to do a Broadway musical.
I wholeheartedly endorse this concept, yet I must confess that it’s not always a simple task to execute. Although Shonda Rhimes staunchly defends the musical episode of Grey’s Anatomy, viewers have remained divided. On the other hand, Doctor Odyssey adopts a more over-the-top style than its Thursday night medical drama counterparts, to the point where I wouldn’t be surprised if their team burst into song at any moment.
