As a veteran Whovian who’s been traversing the vortex of time since the days of Jon Pertwee, I can confidently say that the announcement of Russell T. Davies’ spin-off series, “The War Between the Land and the Sea,” has sent my TARDIS spinning with excitement!
A fresh spin-off series titled “Doctor Who,” named “The War Between the Land and the Sea,” has wrapped up its filming. Since it’s completed, we can expect a release date soon. This intriguing new series is under the guidance of showrunner Russell T. Davies. The storyline revolves around the repercussions of a global conflict instigated by the return of an old enemy, the Sea Devils, last seen in a special episode featuring the Thirteenth Doctor, played by Jodie Whittaker.
Under the star-studded cast of Gugu Mbatha-Raw (“Loki,” “Surface”), Russell Tovey (“Being Human”), and George Robinson (“Sex Education”), the production of “The War Between the Land and the Sea” was first unveiled at San Diego Comic Con in July. Now, following a swift timeline – including 80 days of filming – it has been confirmed that filming has come to an end. The director himself, Davies, shared this thrilling update via a selfie on Instagram, accompanied by the caption: “And that’s a wrap! THE WAR BETWEEN THE LAND AND THE SEA concludes its shoot today after 80 days!” Davies also commended the cast and crew, expressing his anticipation for an “astonishing” final product.
Remarkably, the absence of Ncuti Gatwa as the Fifteenth Doctor doesn’t diminish the allure of this spin-off series, particularly for longtime Doctor Who enthusiasts. The primary antagonists, the Sea Devils, make a reappearance after a lengthy hiatus; they were last seen in 1975 and most recently clashed with the Thirteenth Doctor in 2022. The War Between the Land and the Sea also includes UNIT, a military organization that originated from the early days of Who, having first emerged in 1968. As yet, an official air date hasn’t been announced, but it’s set to premiere on BBC One and Disney+ in 2025. In the interim, fans can view the producer’s post-production selfie posted below.
Russell T. Davies’ Spin-off Series is a Good Omen for ‘Doctor Who’
Even though only five episodes make up The War Between the Land and the Sea , filming was surprisingly swift, a pace rarely seen in today’s entertainment world where fans frequently endure lengthy waits for new projects (like Stranger Things). This rapid production suggests a skilled and well-staffed team is involved, which bodes well for the show’s quality. A quick filming process may also reflect the BBC’s faith in The War Between the Land and the Sea, as Chris Chibnall seems eager to win over audiences following mixed reviews of Ncuti Gatwa’s debut season as the Fifteenth Doctor. Launching a hit spin-off series could boost ratings and rejuvenate fan interest in Doctor Who, ultimately paving the way for future performances by Gatwa.
As a film enthusiast myself, I can’t help but share the infectious enthusiasm and optimism of Russell T. Davies, the mastermind behind the series. His successful track record, particularly in crafting the critically acclaimed three-episode special for Doctor Who‘s 60th anniversary, has left audiences eagerly anticipating more. Given his past success, I’m confident that Davies can repeat this triumph with The War Between the Land and the Sea.
