Despite the ongoing division among Doctor Who fans, those who remain devoted to the show are in for a treat this year. Not only is Ncuti Gatwa scheduled to reappear in Season 2 on Disney+, but a fresh limited spinoff series titled The War Between the Land and the Sea is also slated for release in 2025. In anticipation of both premieres, actor Russell Tovey has noted that this new series differs significantly from the main show, as it appears more like an independent production rather than anything else.
At this year’s Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, Tovey referred to “The War Between the Land and the Sea” as a unique masterpiece when talking about the upcoming spinoff. This spinoff will reintroduce iconic Doctor Who villains, the Sea Devils, for a limited series. Given his previous work on the classic British program, he noted that the atmosphere of this production stands out distinctly.
As a movie enthusiast at Sundance, I can genuinely say this film exudes an indie spirit that truly captivates me. The director, Dylan Holmes Williams, who has previously worked on Doctor Who, brings a unique touch to the project. His presence here at Sundance is not new; he was also present a few years ago with his critically acclaimed short, The Devil’s Harmony. Watching that piece, I could sense the distinct tone he carries, and it’s clear that this production is an extension of that universe, yet it stands as a distinctly original creation within it.
Initially, Tovey made his debut in the universe of “Doctor Who” as far back as 2007, playing Midshipman Alonso Frame in the episode titled “Voyage of the Damned.” He reprised this role once more in the 2010 special “The End of Time,” during which Matt Smith was introduced as a new Time Lord. For his upcoming role in “The War Between the Land and the Sea,” Tovey will play a fresh character alongside Gugu Mbatha-Raw, who will also introduce a new character following her previous portrayal of Martha’s sister Tish Jones.
‘The War Between the Land and the Sea’ Will Focus on UNIT
As a devoted fan, I can’t hide my excitement about the upcoming mini-series, “The War Between the Land and the Sea“. While Ncuti Gatwa’s portrayal of the Doctor has been captivating, it seems he won’t be gracing our screens this time. Instead, the spotlight shifts to the enigmatic military organization, UNIT. This five-episode series revolves around the United Intelligence Taskforce as they rally their forces to avert a catastrophic global conflict with the Sea Devils, an ancient race that reemerges once more.
Apart from Tovey and Mbatha-Raw, the spinoff additionally includes Jemma Redgrave revisiting her character Kate Lethbridge-Stewart, Ruth Madeley portraying Shirley Ann Bingham, and Colin McFarlane, a former Doctor Who cast member, taking on a new role. Filming concluded in December, although an exact release date is yet to be disclosed. As previously mentioned, The War Between the Land and the Sea is slated for premiere later this year. Until the spinoff airs and Gatwa returns, you can catch up on seasons 1-13 of the modern era on Max, while season 14 is available on Disney+.
