‘Doctor Who’s Christmas Special Trailer is Here — Watch Now!

As a longtime fan of Doctor Who, I must say that this new era under Jodie Whittaker as the 13th Doctor is nothing short of exhilarating! Having grown up watching the series, it’s heartening to see the show evolve and adapt to the times we live in. Jodie’s portrayal of the Doctor is a breath of fresh air, and her character’s openness about her sexuality is not only refreshing but also incredibly important for young viewers who might be struggling with their own identities.

As a passionate movie critic, I can confidently say that Ncuti Gatwa and Nicola Coughlan have been consistently spreading “Joy to the World” through their exceptional performances in series such as “Sex Education” and “Bridgerton.” Yet, they’re not just bringing joy to our screens; this year, they’ve officially joined forces for a special occasion. These talented actors will grace our television sets as stars of the upcoming “Doctor Who” Christmas Special, which is scheduled to air on Christmas Day, spreading cheer across our globe, at least when it comes to our living rooms!

In a fresh trailer revealed on Thursday by Disney+ and the BBC, the cherished British show will carry on its tradition – spreading festive cheer through various jolly escapades and amusing mishaps during multiple extraterrestrial interactions this holiday season. According to the official description:

In the year 2024, when Joy enters a hotel in London, she stumbles upon a concealed entrance leading to the Time Hotel instead. This hidden gem reveals peril, dinosaurs, and the enigmatic Doctor. However, an ominous scheme is unraveling globally, perfectly timed for the Christmas season.

What Is This Year’s ‘Doctor Who’ Christmas Special About?

“Does this feel like Christmas?” queries the present Doctor (portrayed by Gatwa) in the trailer’s opening scene. Indeed, it does! Simultaneously, everywhere we look, it seems like Christmas. However, given the vast interconnectedness of the universe, something is bound to malfunction—and it will be up to the Doctor and Joy to rectify the situation and save the day.

Introducing Gatwa and Nicola Coughlan in their new roles as Joy. The ensemble cast also includes Steph de Whalley as Anita, Jonathan Aris as Melnak, Joel Fry as Trev, Peter Benedict as Basil, Julia Watson as Hilda, and Niamh Marie Smith as Sylvia. The script for “Joy to the World” was penned by Steven Moffat, a former showrunner of another popular series ‘Who’ and ‘Sherlock’, who also took the helm in directing. Alex Sanjiv Pillai, who has previously directed episodes of ‘Riverdale’ and ‘Bridgerton’, is responsible for this production. Russell T. Davies currently serves as showrunner and executive producer.

Additionally, Disney+ and the BBC have unveiled a collection of fresh visuals from the upcoming special, all of which are accessible in the gallery provided.

This special marks the debut of Gatwa as both the Doctor and the main character, a role he’s taken on since inheriting the long-held title. Additionally, this season is significant because it brought back beloved showrunner Russell T. Davies, who played a crucial part in reviving the series when it was rebooted in 2005.

Although the third season hasn’t been formally announced yet, this special essentially marks the start of Gatwa’s second season as the Doctor in the TARDIS. Many fans have praised this season as a return to form after two seasons that were somewhat inconsistent. Earlier this year, Gatwa hinted during an interview on The Graham Norton Show that production for a third season of his Doctor adventures was already underway.

It’s thrilling to be a fan right now, as Davies and his innovative team are moving the cherished kids’ show into a more contemporary, progressive, and inclusive era. Gatwa’s Doctor openly embraces his queer identity, which is particularly significant in today’s climate, characterized by divisive politics and hateful discourse aimed at controlling human rights. This change is essential and crucial because our future lies with the children, who must grow up knowing that their future is secure – regardless of where they are in the universe.

After all, showing love for each other and accepting one another’s individuality isn’t some fantastical, temporal paradox. We, as humans, often require such reminders occasionally.
