Doctor Who’s First Disney+ Spinoff Is Still ‘Far From Transmission,’ But I’m Looking Forward To It Even More Following Russell T. Davies’ Latest Update

Occasionally, a new series based on “Doctor Who” emerges, enriching the lore surrounding the Time Lord’s adventures. The upcoming one is titled “The War Between the Land and the Sea“. Similar to its predecessor, this series can be streamed globally with a Disney+ subscription outside the UK. Although creator Russell T. Davies, who also oversees “Doctor Who”, has mentioned that the spinoff is not yet ready for broadcast, his recent comments have me eagerly anticipating the return of the Sea Devils in this new show.

The Conflict of Land and Sea started filming last August and wrapped up in December, but don’t jump to conclusions that it will air on your 2025 TV schedule soon. In an interview with Doctor Who Magazine (as reported by Radio Times), Davies shared some insights regarding the show’s current status:

It’s not yet time to generate excitement for that show because it’s still a long way from airing – it hasn’t even started production. However, I have to say, this is one of the best productions I’ve ever been part of and could be one of my career’s greatest achievements. You can dismiss it as hype now, but if you do, you might miss out on something truly special. Wow, it’s fantastic!

I wasn’t exactly taken aback by the news that The War Between the Land and the Sea won’t be released in the upcoming months. Given that it shares similarities with shows like Doctor Who in terms of visual effects, it makes sense that they wouldn’t want to hurry the process. Since all the footage was shot in late 2024, the post-production team has a challenging task ahead to ensure that The War Between the Land and the Sea is the best it can be.

In simpler terms, Russell T. Davies reveals if Jonathan Groff’s character prevents Alex Kingston’s from reappearing in “Doctor Who”.

Despite Russell T. Davies stating that this spinoff is one of his favorite productions and among the best shows he’s ever worked on, I can’t wait to find out what makes it so exceptional for him. As previously mentioned, The War Between the Land and the Sea will focus on UNIT dealing with the Sea Devils, a formidable and ancient species, rising from the ocean and causing a stir among humans, leading to an international crisis. The Sea Devils, who are related to the Silurians, were initially presented in the 1972 Doctor Who serial “The Sea Devils” and last appeared in 2022’s “Legend of the Sea Devils,” which was second to last for Jodie Whitaker’s Thirteenth Doctor.

Characters from different eras of UNIT featured in Doctor Who, such as Jemma Redgrave’s Kai Lethbridge-Stewart, Alexander Devrient’s Colonel Christofer Ibrahim, Ruth Madeley’s Shirley Ann-Bingham, and Colin McFarlane reprising his role from Torchwood, will return for the upcoming series titled The War Between the Land and the Sea. Moreover, Russell Tovey and Gugu Mbatha-Raw, both known for their roles in Doctor Who, are set to join the cast as new characters. Other actors included in the ensemble are Adrian Lukas, Patrick Baladi, Vincent Franklin, Francesca Corney, and Mei Mac.

At TopMob, we’ll keep you updated as soon as we receive an official release date for “The War Between the Land and the Sea.” However, it’s likely that Doctor Who Season 15, or what is also known as Season 2 of the Disney+ era, will arrive first. But, as of now, even its release date isn’t confirmed yet.
