As a cinephile with over three decades of Doctor Who fandom under my belt, I must say that this year’s Christmas special, “Joy To The World,” was a delightful surprise. With its blend of humor, emotion, and a touch of nostalgia, it reminded me of the golden days of the show.
Caution: The ensuing information may reveal SPOILERS for the Doctor Who Christmas Special titled “Joy To The World”. You can watch it on Disney+, but beware, proceed with reading at your own peril!
The timeless character known as Doctor Who made a brief comeback for another delightful Christmas special titled “Joy To The World”. This time around, we saw the reappearance of the enigmatic villain Villengard, an unexpected journey to Bethlehem, and a fleeting moment with the charming character Ruby Sunday. With these exciting events setting the stage, it’s been confirmed that Doctor Who will return in the new year as part of the 2025 TV lineup. The series mastermind, Russell T. Davies, has shared some intriguing insights with TopMob on how it all leads up to the new season ahead.
I had the good fortune to chat with RTD and Steven Moffat, writer of “Joy To The World,” prior to the special release. In a Zoom meeting, they shared insights about the future direction of “Doctor Who” with me. Davies discussed Joy’s last conversation with The Doctor, Ruby Sunday, and how it ties into the upcoming season.
In simpler terms, the storyline suggests that Joy subtly hints at Steven needing to make new friends, a recurring motif throughout the series. You skillfully express this idea, and it’s no surprise since it’s a significant theme. The ending is particularly touching, with Ruby gazing at the star and reminiscing about the Doctor, possibly receiving calls from both her mothers simultaneously. Yes, indeed, Steven is embarking on his journey. It’s a delightful Christmas gift for viewers! In the upcoming season, you’ll discover Belinda Chandra joining as the new companion, with the events already hinted at in the initial scenes of the new season.
In the recent discussion about “Doctor Who,” it seemed our showrunner was tactfully avoiding a direct response about Ruby Sunday. However, we can confidently anticipate that Ruby will reappear in the series at some stage. Meanwhile, we have Belinda Chandra, portrayed by Varada Sethu, to look forward to. From what Russell T. Davies mentioned earlier, it appears that Belinda might develop a close bond with The Doctor, potentially becoming her latest companion.
More On Doctor Who
As a passionate movie enthusiast, I’m always on the lookout for intriguing updates about my favorite shows. So, when I heard that the talented writer, Russell T. Davies, shared insights into the future of Doctor Who, I just had to delve deeper! Apparently, he hinted at whether Jonathan Groff’s character could keep Alex Kingston’s River Song from making a comeback. Now, isn’t that an exciting piece of news?
Moving forward, it appears that “Joy To The World” stood on its own and didn’t tie heavily into current storylines within “Doctor Who”. Previously, Russell T. Davies hinted to TopMob that additional deities from the Pantheon would be introduced. Additionally, we mentioned that new merchandise is scheduled for a classic adversary in the upcoming year, which could potentially suggest the villain The Doctor will encounter during the next season.
In the midst of his numerous battles, it seems he carves out moments for relaxation and forging new relationships. The sense of loneliness appears to be a persistent issue with The Doctor, yet one wonders if true contentment is attainable, even should Gallifrey be reinstated again. I’d welcome efforts towards happiness in the upcoming season, and I was glad this year’s Christmas episode wasn’t as somber as the previous ones we’ve encountered.
2025 is here, fellow movie enthusiasts, and I, a dedicated Whovian, can hardly contain my excitement as the iconic Doctor Who returns with brand-new episodes! If you’re one of us eagerly awaiting the Time Lord’s adventures, don’t forget to check out the previous season on Disney+.
