Fear the Walking Dead” represents the initial spin-off from the hit AMC zombie series, “The Walking Dead.” Unlike its predecessor which is set on the eastern coast of the United States, this series unfolds on the western coast where a zombie outbreak has been occurring and spreading across the country (and globally). It offers viewers a glimpse into another region, another set of survivors, revealing both their similarities and differences as they struggle for survival in these apocalyptic times.
Among the key figures in the series, Alicia Clark is one. Initially, she appears as a teenage girl trying to grasp the mysteries of the world. However, by the end of Season 7, Alicia has become proficient with a balisong for dispatching walkers and has lived through numerous close calls with death. If you recognize her face, it’s because Alycia Debnam-Carey, who has previously played Lexa on “The 100,” portrays this character.
In a show like “Fear the Walking Dead,” where characters often meet their demise, Alicia’s passing left viewers stunned and signaled the conclusion of an epoch. However, is her death truly final? Here’s what you should understand about Alicia’s departure in the initial “Walking Dead” offshoot.
Alicia Clark’s Fear The Walking Dead journey explained
Initially in the timeline of “Fear the Walking Dead”, Alicia is a 17-year-old girl who sets out to find her boyfriend, Matt, after he’s been bitten by a zombie. Over the course of the series, she eventually ends up assisting in the reconstruction of Los Angeles following many years on the road and witnessing directly the devastation left behind by the undead apocalypse across the southwestern United States and Mexico.
Throughout the course of the series, Alicia assumes leadership roles in various survivor groups, such as the Broke Jaw Ranch in Season 3 and the Dell Diamond Baseball Stadium collective in Season 4. She also collaborates with Morgan (Lennie James) to guide a band of survivors during Season 4. Alicia consistently works towards the safety of her loved ones throughout the show, even going so far as to be captured by a cult in Season 6 to facilitate others’ escape and destroying a tower in the same season following the demise of her friend. In addition to managing politics and survival, she eventually enters into romantic relationships. After Matt’s death in the second episode, Alicia does not pursue another relationship until Season 3, when she encounters Jake (Sam Underwood) at the Broke Jaw Ranch. Tragically, he succumbs to blood loss while attempting to prevent his transformation into a zombie later in the season.
In Season 7, Alicia suffers a walker bite that leads to the amputation of her arm. She does this to prevent the virus from spreading within her body, using the replacement with a prosthetic that serves dual purposes – as a functional limb and a weapon. Towards the end of the series, she experiences a hallucination of a young girl, symbolizing her inner mind, who dissuades her from committing suicide to protect her companions from Strand in Texas. Alicia contracts another walker bite infection, which may ultimately lead to her demise as the season concludes.
Why Alycia Debnam-Carey left Fear The Walking Dead in Season 7
In a post on Instagram dated May 2022, Alycia Debnam-Carey explained that she was leaving “Fear the Walking Dead” because she felt it was time for a change. She wrote, “I started this wild adventure when I was 21, but now at 28, after 7 years and 100 episodes, I felt it was my turn to move on, both as an actor and as a person.” The actress added that she needed fresh challenges and opportunities to create a new path for herself. She thanked everyone involved, from the cast and crew to the showrunners and fans, for the opportunity to develop and learn on the series, describing her time there as an “extraordinary training ground.
Actor Debnam-Carey, who plays a major role in “Fear the Walking Dead,” has left shows for other opportunities before. Her initial appearance was as Lexa on The CW’s “The 100.” This character was adored by fans, but she had to be written off because it wasn’t possible for her to appear concurrently on both “The 100” and “Fear the Walking Dead.” Fan outrage ensued due to Lexa’s untimely death, as it seemed to uphold the “bury your gays” trope that’s prevalent in many TV series. This narrative device was a point of contention because Lexa’s character had just entered a relationship with Clarke (Eliza Taylor), and her death appeared to reinforce this problematic pattern. In an interview with Variety in 2016, the showrunner, Jason Rothenberg, admitted that they didn’t intend for this outcome, acknowledging that his lack of understanding stemmed from his privilege as a straight man.
How Alicia Clark returns in the Fear The Walking Dead series finale
Following her seemingly fatal walker bite in the previous season, Alicia astonishingly reappears in the final episode of “Fear the Walking Dead”. The series finale is packed with characters presumed deceased, yet it’s only in the closing moments that we discover Alicia’s return.
As Madison (Kim Dickens) tirelessly searched for her daughter, believing she had perished, Alicia miraculously survived a walker attack and fled Texas with a band of fellow survivors. Over the ensuing years, Alicia assumed a ghost-like existence, assisting other survivors while allowing them to believe she was deceased. Rumors of the PADRE conflict led Alicia to assume her mother had sacrificed herself in the fray, but this notion proved false when she unexpectedly encountered Madison again on screen. The reunion between mother and daughter was brief yet poignant, and they decided to preserve the illusion of their demise. With Los Angeles in ruins after a bombing, they set out with the intention of aiding survivors in its reconstruction. Strand, now part of Madison’s group, glimpsed Alicia and Madison but kept their secret of being alive hidden from them.
Although Alicia didn’t physically appear until the last episode of Season 8, her presence was felt throughout in a spiritual sense. Through Madison’s flashbacks, Alicia continued to be seen by her mother. At one instance, when Madison encountered what seemed to be a walker, she believed it to be her daughter.
What happened to Alycia Debnam-Carey after Fear The Walking Dead?
Following her departure from “Fear the Walking Dead”, Alycia Debnam-Carey shifted focus in her television career, moving from science fiction to psychological drama. She then appeared in the Hulu miniseries titled “Saint X,” playing the role of Emily, a documentary editor who embarks on a quest to uncover the truth behind her older sister Alison’s (played by West Duchovny) mysterious disappearance during a vacation in the Caribbean twenty years prior. It is later revealed that Alison was murdered, leaving the family without any resolution.
In this project, Debnam-Carey deviated from her established sci-fi background and delved into the realm of drama with the mini-series “The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart.” Co-starring Sigourney Weaver, this Australian production narrates the tale of Alice, a girl who relocates to live with her grandmother following the demise of her abusive father. As an adult, portrayed by Debnam-Carey, she uncovers the hidden secrets that her grandmother, played by Weaver, has been concealing from her.
In simpler terms, the actor went back to making horror movies with the 2024 film titled “It’s What’s Inside.” This movie is a mix of science fiction, comedy, and horror, where a group of friends who haven’t seen each other in nearly a decade reunite and engage in a body-swapping party game. Additionally, Debnam-Carey has also been acting in miniseries, and she will appear in the 2025 Netflix drama “Apple Cider Vinegar,” which is based on the real-life story of a wellness coach who claims to have cured her cancer holistically.
