The Nintendo Switch is likely to be remembered as one of the most remarkable video game consoles ever made, yet its power limitations meant that several contemporary fighting games didn’t make an appearance on this platform. Combat game enthusiasts, in particular, had fewer modern fighting titles to enjoy on Nintendo’s system. However, it did host Dragon Ball FighterZ and a recent version of Guilty Gear Strive. Regrettably, the latest versions of Street Fighter, Tekken, and King of Fighters chose not to be released for this console.
Despite not being renowned for its combat-oriented games, the Switch stands out as the only platform where you could play Street Fighter exclusively, with Ultra Street Fighter 2: The Final Challengers being one such game that didn’t appear on any other contemporary console. Do you remember
From a first glance, it appears that this rendition of the legendary fighter may not live up to expectations. Instead, what fans hoped for was a more substantial Street Fighter game in the series, rather than another port of Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix. The UDON-drawn sprites were well-received, but fans felt somewhat cheated out of a modern installment from the franchise.
Back then, I was deeply engrossed in Capcom’s Street Fighter 5, the latest installment of the series, despite its controversies. Yet, as they say, to err is human.
It’s disappointing that Ultra Street Fighter 2: The Final Challengers is still priced at $40 in the eShop, dropping to $20 only during sales. This game appears less appealing now that Capcom has launched its Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection on Switch, featuring all versions of SF2 (excluding this HD remaster).
In contrast to other adaptations of Street Fighter 2, The Final Challengers offers an exclusive feature. Primarily, it’s pleasing that in this version, characters can execute their finishers with their authentic colors. Previously, these color schemes were absent in the game’s adaptations, making the return of original colors here a delightful touch for authenticity.
It’s an added bonus that in Ultra Street Fighter 2: The Final Challengers, you can select well-drawn UDON sprites. Only Turbo HD Remix on PS3 and Xbox 360 has these redesigned sprites, but it hasn’t been ported elsewhere, notably missing from PC platforms. Interestingly, the game was never brought to PC, leaving The Final Challengers as an exclusive for Nintendo Switch.
From a gameplay perspective, it’s just like playing the traditional Street Fighter, and there’s a charming simplicity to that. Performing basic moves without having to worry about devastating combos gives this game a comforting feel. Players even have the option to revert to the old Arcade graphics if they prefer.
This game stands out with its distinctive characteristics, even though it might not be a bargain at $40 on the eShop, it’s undeniably unique in its own right.
In a thrilling turn of events, the formidable and violent character Ken from SNK vs Capcom: SVC Chaos reappears in Ultra Street Fighter 2, accompanied by his malevolent counterpart Evil Ryu. While they may be refurbished characters with fresh names and enhanced visual effects, their presence adds an exciting dynamic to the game. What’s more, it’s intriguing to see a Capcom character initially conceived by SNK making a comeback here, especially since Terry and Mai from SNK have joined the roster of Street Fighter 6.
Players may recall the quirky Way of the Hado mode, characterized by motion controls that allow them to mimic the Hadouken move and engage Shadaloo foes in a first-person perspective. While calling this game mode “excellent” might be an overstatement, it is a unique feature rarely found in other versions of the iconic fighting game.
Gamers can expect to continue playing Ultra Street Fighter 2 for some time, given its likely compatibility with the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. Since the game isn’t overly complex, fans should feel comfortable diving back into the fray without any concerns. Here’s hoping it goes on sale soon!
