The Nintendo Switch 2 does support 4K resolution, but only in certain conditions.
The updated version of The Switch now provides a significant improvement in graphics when connected to a TV, as it supports 4K resolution compared to the original’s 1080p docked and 720p handheld resolutions.
Is Switch 2 4K?
To clarify, you can only get 4K output when the Switch 2 is connected to its dock and used with a 4K compatible monitor or television. This setup enables the console to display games in 4K resolution at 60 frames per second. Additionally, it supports High Dynamic Range (HDR), enhancing brightness, darkness, and color depth for a more captivating and cinematic gaming experience compared to the original Switch.
In the new version of the gaming console, the enhanced internal components significantly contribute to its increased performance. While Nintendo hasn’t disclosed every detail about their custom-designed Nvidia processor, it’s evident that the system can manage high-definition 4K graphics in docked mode without compromising stability.
The latest dock includes an integrated cooling fan for maintaining temperature while using high-resolution settings. In handheld mode, it maxes out at 1080p resolution, but this doesn’t mean it’s less capable in any way.

On compatible games, the 7.9-inch LCD screen can handle a high frame rate of up to 120 frames per second. It also includes High Dynamic Range (HDR) and Variable Refresh Rate (VRR), which help minimize stuttering and frame skips.
Although handheld mode doesn’t support 4K resolution, you’ll notice enhancements in sharpness, speed, and overall vividness on the compact display. Remember that a game’s ability to deliver 4K output depends on its specific settings.
4K isn’t compatible with every title, however, developers have the opportunity to develop upgraded versions or updates for the Nintendo Switch 2 that take advantage of its advanced hardware.
Nintendo’s flagship series, like Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Mario Kart, are specifically designed to maximize the capabilities of the latest hardware platform.
This gives Nintendo’s unique lineup the visual boost it’s long deserved.
