Domination Dynasty is a multiplayer, low poly take on the Civ formula

  • Domination Dynasty is a new Civ-like from indie studio DFW Games
  • It boasts thousands of players and a simultaneous turn system based on a global timer
  • Progress from ancient to post-modern and build new units, structures and more

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades under my belt, I’ve seen my fair share of turn-based strategy games attempting to conquer the world. From the original Civilization to more recent iterations, I’ve been there, done that, and got the t-shirt (though sadly, it’s out of fashion now). So, when I stumbled upon Domination Dynasty by indie studio DFW Games, I was intrigued, to say the least.

Have you ever imagined ruling over the world alongside countless other players in a large, strategy-based game that takes place over turns? This is a dream that many games have attempted to realize. The newest contender aiming for this challenge is independent game studio DFW Games, with their recently announced 4x strategy game titled Domination Dynasty.

In Domination Dynasty, you’ll find the familiar features akin to those in a Civilization-style game. Each civilization comes with distinctive advantages, along with options for technological advancement. As time progresses from ancient eras to modern times, your structures and military units will gradually evolve.

One distinctive feature is the synchronized global turn timer. In games with thousands of participants such as this one, managing each player’s turn can be complex. However, it streamlines the process by allowing all players to strategize their moves simultaneously and then executing the orders following a global round timer. This setup, in theory, enables an immense number of players to compete for supremacy. In practice, we’ll have to observe how smoothly it functions.

The spectre that lurks

As an avid follower of Domination Dynasty, one aspect that slightly disappoints me is the sparse implementation of AI. This is evident in our chosen visuals, promotional materials, and in-game symbols. It’s a pity because the game’s low poly-aesthetic, particularly suitable for 4x games as demonstrated by The Battle of Polytopia, could shine even brighter with a more robust AI presence.

Still, we’d have to play to be sure. Domination Dynasty is out now on iOS and Android!
