Discussing the upcoming movie Don 3, director Farhan Akhtar recently explained why Shah Rukh Khan was an ideal fit for the character in the first two films. During a conversation at the Waves Summit, Farhan stated that Shah Rukh’s personality perfectly matched the role.
The Don series started with a 2006 remake of the 1978 original, where Shah Rukh replaced Amitabh Bachchan in the iconic role. After they became friends during Dil Chahta Hai, Farhan and SRK spent many evenings together between 2001 and 2005. During this time, Farhan was penning Don, and he envisioned only Shah Rukh for the part.
Farhan felt certain that SRK was the right choice from the beginning. He admired Shah Rukh’s blend of charisma and menace, which mirrored the character’s essence. In his view, Shah Rukh’s humor, confidence, and self-deprecating style added layers to Don. This made it effortless for Farhan to visualize him in the role. He didn’t even consider other options.
Farhan also mentioned that the role was significant for Shah Rukh, who is a massive fan of the original film and Amitabh Bachchan. Farhan remembered that SRK was thrilled at the prospect of portraying a character previously played by his idol. Although there would be comparisons, Farhan expressed confidence in Shah Rukh’s ability to handle them, as he felt Shah Rukh wasn’t afraid of being compared to a legend like Bachchan.
Farhan also disclosed that SRK was anticipating the offer. Since they had discussed the script during their time together, Shah Rukh suspected that Farhan would eventually propose the role to him. By the time the offer came, he was already prepared to accept.
Shah Rukh played Don in both the 2006 film and its 2011 sequel, Don 2. Farhan directed both movies. In 2023, Farhan announced Don 3, with Ranveer Singh taking over the lead role. However, the production has faced numerous delays, and filming is yet to commence. Recently, rumors surfaced that the project might be postponed again, but the production house refuted these claims. As of now, Don 3 continues to be in development, and Farhan hasn’t directed another movie since Don 2.
