As a dedicated admirer, I’m excited to share that I’m strongly considering making a trip to Los Angeles next week. My purpose? To witness firsthand the heartbreaking aftermath of the destructive wildfires that have affected the city.
Trump shared with NBC News’ Kristen Welker over the weekend that he intends to pay a visit following his swearing-in ceremony on Monday, expressing, “I expect to be there towards the end of the week.
He mentioned that he had initially planned to go the day before, but he decided it would be more fitting if he went in his role as president. It seems more suitable, he thinks.
Trump’s visit will occur following a series of fires that started in Pacific Palisades on January 7, which were intensified by powerful Santa Ana winds. In the ensuing days, additional fires ignited throughout Los Angeles County, including Altadena. Firefighters have been tirelessly working around the clock to control these blazes, but over 12,000 homes, buildings, and structures have been devastated by their paths, forcing numerous residents from their homes. At least 25 lives were lost in these fires.
The newly elected president has frequently expressed disapproval towards California’s Democratic administration, particularly Governor Gavin Newsom, and their approach to managing wildfires. Despite an invitation from Governor Newsom for Trump to observe the destruction recently, Trump has opted to criticize Governor Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass on his social media site Truth Social, without substantiation, regarding the wildfire incidents.
Governor Gavin Newsom declined to approve a water restoration declaration presented to him, which would have enabled millions of gallons of water from excess rain and snowmelt from the North to be delivered daily across California, even to regions currently experiencing near-apocalyptic wildfires,” Trump stated at one point, using a derisive term for Newsom.
Last week, Newsom informed NBC News that addressing Donald Trump‘s criticisms might require another full month.
On Saturday, Trump stated to Welker that he hasn’t had a direct conversation with Newsom since the fires started. When asked if emergency aid for California was among his initial concerns when he assumes office, the incoming president replied, “We will certainly consider it from various angles. We plan to demand the water be released from the north towards lower California regions.
Following the remarks made by Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson, who proposed “conditions” for further federal aid to assist Los Angeles in managing the fires, I find myself expressing my concern as a supporter. In other words, I believe that during such critical times, support and assistance should be provided without strings attached.
