CBS is well-known for its long-running shows like NCIS and Survivor, but even this established network has had unexpected cancellations over the past year or two. Some of these popular series concluded in 2024, with Blue Bloods being one of the most significant losses in terms of longevity and viewership. The show was canceled by CBS in 2023, followed by an announcement for a spinoff starring Donnie Wahlberg.
Ever since the initial announcement, information regarding the Boston-based follow-up series has been sparse, and it’s uncertain if the working title “Boston Blue” will stick or not. However, Wahlberg himself hinted at the 2025 series in a way that longtime fans should find exciting. Although he doesn’t explicitly mention the iconic Reagan family dinners, his words suggest that they might be part of it.
In an interview with Fox News, Donnie Wahlberg expressed his fondness for not only his co-stars but also everyone involved in keeping Blue Bloods running from one episode to another. He mentioned that as he considered the offer for a new season, the entire team was on his mind. To explain this, he said:
“When contemplating the sequel, I couldn’t help but think of the collective group who have been instrumental in keeping our show alive each week.
‘How can there be a Blue Blood spinoff if the entire family isn’t there?’ And I completely understand that dilemma. Indeed, how would we handle that situation?
Due to Wahlberg’s commitment to interacting with fans on social media as well as in person, especially when it comes to the New Kids on the Block fanbase, it’s clear he understands what viewers anticipate and desire when Boston Blue premieres this fall. He is also aware that Danny isn’t the only Reagan character fans will be eagerly watching, particularly during the final scenes of each episode.
Having played a crucial role in preserving “Blue Bloods”, Wahlberg found it essential to take charge of the new series single-handedly, and believed this was the best decision to make. However, he subtly hinted that he won’t be the sole Reagan family member appearing on prime-time television by saying:
Embracing this chance was undeniably tough, yet I repeatedly thought, “If I’m truly committed to Blue Bloods continuing, here’s my chance.” Now, it’s merely Danny venturing into a new realm, but I can’t reveal much about it – though I may say, if he’s a Reagan, it will never just be Danny. There’ll always be a Reagan ready to offer guidance. And the customs that the Reagans uphold, Danny wouldn’t forsake those traditions.
It’s unlikely that all family members will attend, but the dinner scene in the final episode of Blue Bloods may mark the last time many original cast members share a meal together. However, it seems there might be changes to accommodate the show’s ongoing storylines without significantly disrupting them.
It’s possible that Danny will receive visits from one or two family members weekly to share a meal at his new Boston apartment. Alternatively, Danny could set up multiple devices around a dinner table and connect with friends through video calls. While the methods may vary, the excitement from fans remains endless.
Though a specific release date for “Boston Blue” hasn’t been specified yet, it appears that production is likely to start this summer. This way, the drama can gracefully premiere on CBS during their fall television lineup. Keep an eye out for further news, and don’t forget to save a seat for us when the time comes!
