As a devoted cinephile, I’ve been eagerly following the saga of the John Wick film series, which seems to be at a standstill for now. While the finale of Chapter 4 appears to wrap up Keanu Reeves’ character’s storyline, there are whispers about the possibility of Chapter 5 materializing, though I’m concerned about the actor’s knee issues. However, it’s clear that the John Wick universe is far from its end. The upcoming Ana de Armas-led film Ballerina, slated for release this summer in 2025, promises to keep the franchise alive. Furthermore, there are several spinoffs in development, one of them focusing on Donnie Yen‘s Caine character. I’m crossing my fingers that these spinoffs move ahead rather than John Wick: Chapter 5, given the recent update about the project.
During an interview with Steve Weintraub from Collider about his upcoming film The Prosecutor, Yen disclosed that a spinoff featuring Caine is currently in development. He also hinted at the prospect of him taking on directorial duties in addition to acting. Notably, Yen previously helmed The Prosecutor, and Weintraub recalled that Chad Stahelski, famously known for directing the John Wick films, had suggested this possibility in the past. Here’s what Yen shared on the topic:
It seems both fans and the studio are hoping for this event to transpire, and it remains to be seen. Honestly, Steve, all I can say is that discussions are taking place, and they’re quite deep. The outcome is uncertain, but rest assured, there’s a sense of responsibility and pressure to preserve the franchise’s integrity. My aim is to infuse something new into the series, while ensuring fans’ expectations aren’t disappointed. I always strive to do my best.
It’s reassuring to hear directly from Donnie Yen that the Caine spinoff is indeed in development, as Variety and other major Hollywood trades often provide reliable information about upcoming films and TV shows. However, it’s important to note that Lionsgate has not yet officially given the go-ahead for this project. If the discussions between Donnie Yen and Lionsgate are considered intimate, this could suggest a positive outlook for its progression. As Donnie Yen has extensive experience in directing movies, it would be fascinating to see how he might approach a Hollywood production for the Caine spinoff.
Let’s get straight to the point: John Wick is believed to be deceased, and bringing him back for Chapter 5 seems quite unlikely. Instead, let’s focus on a character who didn’t get enough screen time in his debut – Caine. As we saw in the post-credits scene of John Wick: Chapter 4, Caine returned to Paris to reunite with his daughter, but Rina Sawayama’s Shimazu Akira is hot on his trail, seeking vengeance for her father’s death. Why not dedicate a movie to Caine’s story instead? Keanu Reeves will reprise the role of John Wick in Ballerina, which takes place between Chapter 3 and Chapter 4.
If the Caine spinoff doesn’t occur before John Wick: Chapter 4, it’s clear he would survive this attack. As for what lies ahead for the visually impaired High Table assassin, that remains uncertain. However, I’m eager to explore more about Caine, and I hope a movie centered around him takes precedence over Chapter 5. In the meantime, I’m eagerly anticipating Ballerina’s release on June 6th.
