As an ardent admirer, I was hopeful that Ellie’s tale would find its conclusion with The Last of Us Part II, and it seems that the game’s director, Neil Druckmann himself, shares this belief, hinting at potential grounds for a third installment in the series.
This year, Druckmann stirred up conversation by hinting that there might not be a Part III. However, some speculate he was being evasive, but Druckmann himself has provided more insight into the potential of a third installment.
Many Stars Have to Align
During a chat with E-Talk at the debut of The Last of Us Season 2 (shared by DomTheBombYT on YouTube), Druckmann elaborates:
In every game or project I undertake, I approach it as though it’s my final opportunity. Consequently, I invest all my resources and effort into it, ensuring nothing is left unfinished. This was how we approached the first “The Last of Us” game, and I felt the same when working on its sequel, “Uncharted 4,” as well as “The Last of Us 2.” Each time, I wasn’t certain if I would have another chance to work on such projects, so they were given a conclusive ending. The ending we are striving towards is one of those.
As a gamer speaking directly about Neil Druckmann, he’s currently immersed in crafting the next installment of his epic series and an exciting new game titled “Intergalactic”. It looks like we’ll have to wait a bit before he even begins contemplating “The Last of Us Part III.
To have another project or item emerge, numerous factors need to align perfectly – it’s not something I can promise at the moment. Therefore, for now, my concentration is solely on this current season. Fingers crossed if HBO decides to renew us, there might be a next season; and in the meantime, I’m developing a new game titled “Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.
Games vs Series
It might still be some time until we see “The Last of Us Part III”, but if HBO’s speculation about a four-season run is accurate, then the narrative of “The Last of Us Part II” would conclude in Season 3. In turn, Season 4 could potentially delve into the storylines that Neil Druckmann had envisioned for “Part III”.
Despite concerns from many fans that the series might deviate from its original storyline, similar to what occurred with Game of Thrones, it’s important to mention that Neil Druckmann is collaborating closely on the production. This means he’ll have a significant role in anything that unfolds.
It’s rumored that “Intergalactic” will release in 2027, which could potentially push back the debut of the third “Last of Us” game to as far as 2030. Under such circumstances, it might be more satisfying to wrap up Ellie and Abby’s storyline in the TV series instead.
In Part II, Ellie’s circumstances took a downturn. However, her unique immunity to the cordyceps virus remains unexplored. If there’s a third game, it might delve into Ellie’s struggle between preserving her own life and saving humanity. Perhaps, the story could conclude with a cure for the apocalypse being discovered in this hypothetical sequel.
Currently, Neil Druckmann’s next project set for release is “The Last of Us” Season 2, scheduled for premiere on April 13th.
