‘Don’t Call Me Brave:’ Nicola Coughlan Gets Honest About All The Body-Related Questions She Got After Having Nude Scenes In Bridgerton Season 3

As a gamer who’s spent countless hours immersed in the virtual world, I can’t help but draw parallels to Nicola Coughlan‘s experiences in the real and reel worlds. Just like leveling up my character, she’s shown strength, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to her craft. However, unlike my character, she’s had to confront a different kind of challenge – the objectification that often comes with being a woman in the public eye.

Approaching the highly anticipated premiere of Bridgerton‘s third season on Netflix’s 2024 schedule, Nicola Coughlan and Luke Newton found themselves in numerous interviews discussing Colin and Penelope’s romantic tale. Naturally, this led to answering a multitude of questions about their intimate scenes in the show, and on several occasions, Coughlan was lauded as “brave” for her nudity. However, she doesn’t view this label as a compliment, and she openly shared her reasons behind it.

Whenever Nicola Coughlan talked about her stint in Bridgerton, she was always candid and upbeat regarding the sex scenes she shared with Luke Newton. She reminisced asking to be bare in certain Season 3 scenes, and both she and the actor portraying Colin were equally open and straightforward about their collaboration on such an intimate aspect. However, being labeled “brave” for performing that work is not something Nicola appreciates, as she clarified to Time magazine.

Please refrain from labeling me as courageous. Displaying my ample bosom is simply a matter of self-expression, not an act of bravery.

Let me clarify, the leading actress takes immense pride in her nude scenes on the Netflix series, and she’s not shy about discussing it. Just prior to this statement, she expressed her great pride in Penelope and Colin’s intimate moments, as they demonstrated the vulnerability between their characters and the trust they shared.

Yet, when it comes to public scrutiny of her body and agreeing to perform certain scenes, these are the aspects that cause her discomfort. The actress from “Derry Girls” elaborated on her reasons for not wanting to frequently discuss this subject, stating:

In the U.K., I’m smaller than the typical woman, often labeled as a ‘plus-size icon.’ Earning that role required immense effort. My schedule was so hectic that I had little time for loved ones, and people would remark about my body, saying things like, “But your figure though…” However, I put in the hard work to achieve it.

Indeed, that’s accurate. She was frequently inquired about it, as evident during a film screening earlier this year when Coughlan was praised as “brave” for her nude scenes. However, she gracefully countered with a body-positive response.

You know it is hard because I think women with my body type — women with perfect breasts, we don’t get to see ourselves on screen enough and I’m very proud as a member of the perfect breast community. I hope you enjoy seeing them.

In her recent interview with Time, Coughlan was more forthright and blunt in addressing the comments that prompted the response you’ve seen earlier. The article pointed out that she recognizes these questions might be intended as a compliment. Nevertheless, she does not view them in such a light. Describing them as “reductive” and “uninspiring,” she stated her perspective.

I find it far from flattering when you focus solely on my appearance. It’s limiting and uninteresting to discuss me in those terms. Suppose, hypothetically, I decided to train as a ballerina and lost a significant amount of weight. Would your opinion of me change? That notion is preposterous and deeply offensive.

She made a very clear point here that her looks should not define her work, noting that she could transform physically for a role, and that shouldn’t be at the center of attention. As she said, there’s a lot that goes into making a show like Bridgerton. While there is a time and a place to talk about the nudity and sex scenes, she believes that conversations surrounding physical appearance shouldn’t be the primary focal point.

Now, it will be interesting to see how the conversation surrounding nudity and sex on screen evolves. Bridgerton Season 4 is currently in production, and odds are, Luke Thompson and Yerin Ha will face a similar level of attention that Coughlan and Newton got during their season. As this discourse continues, we’ll be sure to keep you posted.

In the meantime, you can steam the first three seasons of Bridgerton with a Netflix subscription.
