Movies that explore time travel have consistently captivated audiences, with numerous distinctive tales being brought to life by Hollywood. One such film, the 2019 thriller Don’t Let Go, has experienced an unexpected resurgence, recently climbing into Netflix’s top ten list after its release on the platform. Since its arrival on Netflix on February 16, Don’t Let Go has swiftly risen in the streaming rankings, reaching #4 within just two days. This is quite an achievement given that it has outperformed well-established films like Kinda Pregnant and Rambo: Last Blood, both of which have been performing well since their premiere a week prior. At present, La Dolce Villa, Aftermath, and Trial by Fire occupy the top three positions on the streaming chart. Honeymoon Crasher, Uncle Drew, and Back in Action, added to the service over a week ago, are close behind, though they currently trail these top-ranked titles.
In the movie penned and directed by Jacob Estes, we follow Detective Jack Radcliff (David Oyelowo) who receives a startling call from his niece Ashley (Storm Reid). But when he rushes to help her, he finds out that her calls are coming from the future. [Spoiler alert] To prevent Ashley’s tragic fate of being killed, Jack has to act swiftly and solve the crime before it happens. The film is captivating audiences primarily because of the intense connection between David Oyelowo and Storm Reid, which is arguably its most powerful feature, closely followed by its intriguing storyline.
Although it has been successful on streaming platforms lately, the movie initially had difficulty catching on when it was first released in 2019 in cinemas. It received a commendable audience rating of 79% on Rotten Tomatoes, but critics were less impressed, awarding it a low score of 42%. This is because they believed that the movie’s time-travel concept wasn’t executed as well as anticipated. Given this mixed reception, potential viewers might find themselves uncertain about whether to watch Netflix’s latest time-travel film, Don’t Let Go.
‘Don’t Let Go’: Is This Sci-Fi Thriller Worth Your Time?
Although some may be deterred by mixed opinions about the movie “Don’t Let Go“, this piece believes that it is an outstanding science fiction film worthy of greater acclaim. For example, while certain critics found fault with the production, others, such as Marissa De La Cerda from Chicago Reader and Kevin Maher from UK Times, have commended it for its fresh approach to the genre. This makes it a recommended viewing for those who haven’t grown tired of time-travel themed movies yet.
Even though some critics might not have loved it as much, audiences seem to really enjoy “Don’t Let Go”.
