Over the past few years, there’s been something of a resurgence for big-screen video game adaptations. However, to serve as a reminder of how things used to be, Mark Wahlberg‘s poorly received 2008 action film is set to stream for free. This movie is based on the franchise by Remedy Entertainment and published by Rockstar Games, with Wahlberg playing the main character who seeks revenge as a cop after his family is killed.
[Official Synopsis Below]
Following the tragic murders of his family and his partner, the unorthodox police officer Max, played by Mark Wahlberg, becomes relentless in seeking vengeance. Partnering with the enigmatic and deadly Russian mobster Mona Sax (Mila Kunis), Max ventures into a shadowy underworld to uncover the truth. However, not only worldly forces but also mysterious ones seem determined to thwart him, aiming to silence Max for good.
Mark Wahlberg Is Woefully Miscast as the Video Game Antihero
Although Mark Wahlberg gave his all in the role, many find him poorly suited as the gritty character Max Payne. Similarly, the film’s adaptation of the video game’s “bullet time” effect is disappointingly missing. In fact, it would have been more accurate to label the movie posters with “woeful.” This sentiment is mirrored in its 16% Rotten Tomatoes rating (29% from audiences). Yet, if you look past the murky cinematography and search for the positive aspects, there are some visually appealing action scenes that are worth watching – especially if they’re free.
Initially, it seemed like the success of Max Payne would lead to a new action series based on the video game, given the release of follow-ups such as Max Payne 2 and Max Payne 3. However, the reception to the first film had been so negative that any future plans were put on hold indefinitely. But, in 2022, it was made public that a reboot for the franchise is now being developed at 20th Century Studios.
Mark Wahlberg remains deeply engaged in action roles, recently assuming the villain part for Mel Gibson’s movie titled “Flight Risk“. In this film, Wahlberg portrays a hitman disguised as a pilot, aiming to eliminate a mob informant. Regrettably, Flight Risk resulted in Wahlberg receiving negative reviews from critics on Rotten Tomatoes once more.
This Oscar-nominated actor is working on multiple action productions. One of these projects involves him assuming roles previously portrayed by Mel Gibson and action star Jason Statham – specifically, the mysterious Parker – in the forthcoming crime thriller titled “Play Dirty;“. He’s also set to reappear for the sequel “The Family Plan 2” on Apple TV+. Additionally, he is slated to star alongside Paul Walter Hauser, Molly Shannon, Eva De Dominici, Benjamin Bratt, Daniela Melchior, Eric André and Chelsey Crisp in director Peter Farrelly’s action-comedy “Balls Up“. Lastly, he will headline the long-awaited reboot of the cherished 70s action series “The Six Million Dollar Man“.
