In December 2022, “The Recruit” Season 1 made its debut on Netflix, quickly rising to become one of their most popular shows. This gripping series was developed by Alexi Hawley, who drew inspiration from Adam Ciralsky – a renowned writer, filmmaker, and attorney for the CIA. The first season, comprising eight episodes, immersed viewers in a thrilling world filled with international tension, deception, manipulation, and high-octane action.

In “The Recruit,” Noah Centineo stars as Owen Hendricks, a greenhorn attorney who found himself entangled in high-stakes situations. The thrilling first season was filled with unexpected turns and left viewers on the edge of their seats with its jaw-dropping cliffhanger. With the arrival of Season 2 just around the corner, let’s refresh our memories about Season 1.

Owen’s Graymail Duty Leads to His Entanglement in International Conflicts

As a supporter, I find myself thrust into a situation where my colleagues, Lester and Violet, have assigned me a seemingly mundane task – graymail duty. However, little did they know that this routine assignment would catapult me right into the heart of the action instead.

While sifting through a mountain of unopened mail, Owen stumbles upon a missive from a woman detained at Phoenix’s penal institution for the murder of a truck driver. This woman, who once served as a Russian asset, warns that she will disclose sensitive data that could tarnish the CIA’s standing unless her criminal charges are dropped. Upon confirming the letter’s authenticity, Owen delivers it to his superior. This one action significantly alters Owen’s career at the CIA, and he finds himself suddenly thrust into the field, becoming embroiled in complex international politics.

Owen Faces Situations That Make Him Want to Leave the CIA

Although he initially joined the agency as a lawyer, Owen found himself thrust into numerous combat scenarios. For instance, during a trip to Yemen to meet Dawn Gilbane, he encountered physical violence. Later, while following Max’s instructions to retrieve a bag, he was ambushed by cartel members. An even more harrowing incident occurred when he had to leap from a bridge to escape pursuers, showcasing that his work with the CIA required skills beyond those provided by his legal education.

Regardless of his persistence, Owen ultimately reaches his breaking point when compelled to take a life to protect Max from being harmed during her encounter with Lev, which went awry. The brutal act and the sight of the ensuing violence prove too much for him, leading him to declare that he wants no further involvement with Max or the agency. Max does her best to keep Owen by her side, even threatening him with a gun, but to no avail – he leaves. In a testament to their complex bond, Max then contacts Dawn and expresses concerns about the lawyer, hinting at the need to eliminate Owen from the picture.

Xander Goi Is Killed

In the second installment of the thrilling series, I’m introduced to the character of Xander Goi, a CIA operative based in Vienna. By the climax of the seventh episode, tragically, Goi met his end. Upon reaching Max and Owen’s hotel room, he was ambushed and brutally taken down by an unidentified assassin – a chilling mystery that lingers throughout the series.

It’s still unknown who killed Goi, but according to Owen, it was likely because Max exposed Goi’s affair with Kirill, a powerful Council member whose wife was involved. Max showed Kirill photos of his wife and her affair as a way to get money for her safe return home. However, Max disputes this theory, suggesting that although she anticipated Kirill would retaliate, the timing didn’t add up. The assassin appeared too soon after Max made the deal with Kirill, implying that the assassination was intended for both Max and Owen, and Goi was unfortunately caught in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Max’s Daughter Is Alive

In episode 5 of “The Recruit,” it becomes clear that Max has a child named Karolina. When Owen expresses surprise at this revelation, suggesting he wasn’t aware Max was a mother, she implies that her daughter is deceased. Owen seems to empathize with Max in this moment, and their shared past may be deepening their bond. A photograph of Max and her daughter, Karolina, is discovered when they open the safe deposit box at the bank, and Max shares this information with Owen.

Despite the assumption that her daughter was deceased, Max encounters her daughter in the final episode of the series, where they are both abducted. This comes as a surprise to Owen, as he recognizes Karolina under her alias, Nichka Lashin. Intriguingly, Owen had previously interacted with her at a bar under a different identity. Karolina had adopted the persona of Nichka, a high-ranking mafia member, and had been following Owen and Max since their European arrival to prevent them from revealing Kirill’s true nature.

Max Is Shot in the Season Finale

In a startling turn of events, it’s revealed in the final episode of “The Recruit” that Max is fatally shot by her daughter, Karolina. Just before collapsing, Max manages to say “Karolina,” and then Karolina, showing no remorse, shoots Max point-blank in the chest with a chilling look on her face. This underscores the fact that Karolina is as deadly as her mother.

Max significantly contributed to every episode during Season 1 of The Recruit, making her character indispensable to the show’s narrative. The unexpected twist of her apparent demise left fans shocked and eagerly waiting for answers in Season 2. Will Max have perished from the gunshot wound or somehow managed to survive? This is one of the main mysteries that viewers are yearning to unravel, as they wonder how the series will continue if Max has indeed met her end.

The Recruit Season 2 is scheduled for release on Netflix on January 30, 2025.
