One of the most underrated sci-fi action shows, and one that’s suitable for some good old-fashioned family watching, is all set to land on free streaming. Making its debut back in 2016, Timeless offers all manner of historical shenanigans as a small band of heroes must come together to save everything after a rogue government steals the time travel tech and embarks on a mission to change the past.
Created by The Boys’ Eric Kripke and The Night Agent’s Shawn Ryan, the series stars
as Lucy Preston, a history professor, Matt Lanter as United States Army Delta Force soldier and Master Sergeant Wyatt Logan, and Malcolm Barrett as nervous programmer Rufus Carlin, the three of which make up the main trio tasked with saving the world, alongside Sakina Jaffrey, Paterson Joseph, Claudia Doumit, and Goran Višnjić, Timeless is all set to materialize on free streaming platform
later this month on March 25, and you can check out the official synopsis below.
“When a group with nefarious intentions attempts to change the world as we know it by altering the past, Lucy, a historian, Wyatt, a soldier, and Rufus, a scientist, unite to form an unlikely partnership, traveling through time to save history. Their riveting adventures take them to some of the most thrilling, volatile and critical events on record, including a venture to the Old West, a sojourn to the Alamo, a visit to the famous Chicago World’s Fair and a crusade into Nazi Germany.
Along the way, they cross paths with famous historical icons, such as Josephine Baker, Harry Houdini, Ernest Hemingway and infamous rivals Eliot Ness and Al Capone. But every step the team takes to protect history puts everything we know at risk — because changing one thing changes everything.”
‘Timeless’ Suffered a Tumultuous Time Behind the Scenes
Timeless was met with rave reviews from critics and audiences alike. Season 1 was awarded an impressive 83% on Rotten Tomatoes, with audiences even more enamored, resulting in the show getting 85% on the Popcornmeter. “Sometimes goofy but consistently entertaining, Timeless is a fun throwback action series with a kooky premise that’s worth a watch,” the critics’ consensus reads.
Like so many underappreciated shows, Timeless suffered a tumultuous time behind the scenes. Canceled by NBC after the first season, the series was suddenly renewed just a few days later. Timeless was given a ten-episode second season…before being canceled again. Thankfully, fans did eventually get the closure they longed for, with Timeless being brought back for a two-part finale, which aired back in 2018.
And it was well worth the backstage drama, with Timeless Season 2 landing a perfect score of 100% from critics and 92% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. At the time, Kevin Yeoman of Screen Rant heaped praise on the second season, saying, “Overall, the series has returned with a much better understanding of where its strengths and weaknesses are, and how to bring out the former as much as possible.”
These sentiments were shared by Michael Ahr of Den of Geek, who gave the show a near-perfect 4.5/5, concluding, “The show appears to have kept the ingredients that work, such as the chemistry between characters and the historical hijinx, and switched up the elements that needed tweaking.” Finally, Allison Shoemaker of RogerEbert.com called Timeless Season 2 “leaner, smarter, and funnier, its stories more focused on people and moments than scale and scope.”
