As a seasoned film enthusiast with a keen eye for suspenseful storytelling, I must say that “Don’t Move” has certainly managed to keep me on the edge of my seat. The narrative masterfully weaves a tale of survival, deception, and ultimate redemption.
Warning: Spoilers for Don’t Move.
As a movie critic, allow me to share my thoughts on the gripping Netflix horror-thriller, “Don’t Move.” In this chilling tale, I find myself in the shoes of the protagonist, Iris (Kelsey Asbille), a woman grieving the loss of her son, Mateo (Denis Kostadinov), who perished in a hiking accident. In a heart-wrenching sequence, Iris returns to the cliff from which he fell, contemplating joining him. Enter Richard (Finn Wittrock), a seemingly friendly stranger who manages to persuade me to carry on living.
After coming to, she finds herself restrained with zip ties in the back of Richard’s car. She starts to panic but soon forms a strategy to get free. Amazingly, Richard didn’t search her pockets, so the knife she carried that morning remains concealed. She manages to slice through her restraints using the hidden blade, then assaults Richard. However, he deftly avoids her and causes the car to collide with a tree. They scuffle for a moment before she escapes the vehicle and dashes into the forest. It’s only then that Richard admits he injected her with a potent paralyzing drug, the effects of which will peak in 20 minutes. As she flees, the drug takes hold, and the heart-stopping tension of the movie unfolds.
What Happens to Iris After the Paralytic Drug Takes Effect?
With every ticking second on my smartwatch, I could feel the countdown to disaster drawing closer. Richard was hot on my heels, and with the paralytic drug coursing through my veins, I knew escape was growing increasingly unlikely. In a desperate bid for freedom, I plunged into the nearby river, only for Richard to warn me that swimming would be futile.
In the background, hidden but not too far from Richard, a lawn mower lies in wait, about to halt just inches from Iris’ head, until Bill (Moray Treadwell) steps in and switches it off, then attends to her. With just the power of blinking, Iris responds to his queries before he picks her up and transports her into his cabin using a wheelbarrow. But it doesn’t take much time before there’s a knock on the door – Iris’ attacker has returned. Iris subtly warns Bill with her eyes, causing him to conceal her behind his living room couch.
In the quiet night, stepping into Bill’s cabin with a tale about my unstable spouse, I couldn’t help but ponder if it was the truth. Yet, upon finding a functioning phone on him – contradicting his statement – it became evident that Bill had second thoughts. Alas, it was too late as we found ourselves wrestling. In the heat of the moment, I struck Bill, and moments after he dialed 911, I did the same to him. With a flame in my hand, I torched the cabin, hoping to erase any trace of our encounter. But just as I was about to drive off, I noticed a faint signal from within the cabin’s blinds – it was Iris, barely moving but managing to communicate that she was still alive. Unfortunately for her, she’d fallen back into the clutches of a ruthless and unpredictable killer like myself.
Richard’s Secret Requires a Change of Plans
After being saved from the burning house, Iris discovers that Richard has been concealing something important. During a phone conversation he conducts over speakerphone, Iris finds out that he is married and has a daughter, who are apparently unaware of his additional involvements. Tragically for Richard, they inform him that they will be visiting him at the cabin the next day to celebrate his daughter’s academic achievements. As a result, Richard must adjust his plans, which eventually leads to his undoing.
In Bill’s vehicle, Iris found herself as a passenger again, as Richard aimed to revisit the site of their first accident. Once more, Iris was rendered powerless. She started exhibiting signs of movement, yet these instances were brief and ineffective. Stranded at a gas station, she struggled to summon aid, despite her determined attempts. However, a perceptive woman sensed something amiss and immediately dialed the police as they departed. Regrettably, this call for assistance ended tragically when a police officer failed to uncover the truth in a timely manner, resulting in another fatality.
In response to Iris’ plea for help to an officer, Richard instead grabs a towing chain and strikes the officer, fatally injuring him. He then places the officer in his police car and sets it on fire, snatching the officer’s gun along the way. Caught off guard by his wife and daughter earlier, he now hastily executes his revised plan. Enraged further, Richard takes Iris to a small canoe situated in the center of the lake as his final hiding spot for her.
Mateo’s Boat Saves the Day
Thank goodness, Iris starts to regain some mobility. Sadly, this progress proves fleeting as it becomes evident when she tries to retaliate against Richard by jabbing him with his own paralytic drug. Although she manages to poke the syringe into his leg, she fails to administer the drug effectively. He then forcefully moves her onto a small canoe in the lake, suggesting he intends to let her drown.
Before Richard carries out his last move, Iris requests one final look at Mateo’s red boat, which she still has from their first meeting in her pocket. As he bends down to pick it up, she manages to snatch his knife and stabs him under his chin. They struggle for a moment before she grabs the gun and shoots him several times, causing him to fall against the wall. Unfortunately, the gunfire damages the canoe, causing it to start taking on water.
Initially, it seems Iris is unable to swim strongly enough and slips beneath the water with the boat. Yet, against all odds, she emerges from the water, struggling toward the shore. Meanwhile, Richard, hanging on for dear life in the background, struggles to breathe before Iris reaches him. In a poignant moment, Iris thanks him – a phrase that echoes his words to his dying girlfriend Chloe, the same instant that led to his tragic transformation into the psychopath he is now. Watch it on Netflix.
