- Don’t Starve Together is no longer coming to Netflix Games
- But it will be coming to mobile on iOS and Android regardless
- Playdigious and Klei Entertainment promise an update on the launch at some point in the future
Since our last update about Don’t Starve Together being planned for Netflix Games in June 2024, there has been a significant gap without any news. However, I bring both disappointing and exciting tidings. The unfortunate part is that the game won’t be available on Netflix. But
Playdigious continues collaborating with Klei Entertainment to transport the cooperative survival game Don’t Starve Together onto mobile devices. This darkly whimsical Don’t Starve series places you on an island teeming with dangerous wildlife, where your goal is to find resources and stay alive – above all else, avoid starvation.
Initially planned to debut only on Netflix’s gaming platform, Don’t Starve Together will now be rolled out worldwide for mobile devices, including iOS and Android. This means you can download it from Google Play and the iOS App Store in the near future, although an exact release date hasn’t been confirmed yet. However, developers Klei Entertainment and Playdigious assure us that they are working diligently on a launch date.
No Netflix for you
It appears that Don’t Starve Together’s exclusive agreement with Netflix has ended, and thankfully, it will be available worldwide. However, I find myself pondering what this development (and similar incidents involving other indie games like Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon) might indicate about the future dedication of Netflix to the independent gaming scene.
Clearly, Don’t Starve isn’t a minor franchise; it’s widely recognized as one of the most legendary survival indie games ever made. If such a popular title can struggle, then what chance do others have? It’s disheartening because Netflix’s collection of indie games has been a significant draw for me.
To gain insights into my viewpoint, feel free to scan a brief overview of my take on the premiere of Squid Game: Unleashed, and understand why I believe that Netflix’s heightened emphasis on its own productions might potentially be detrimental to the thriving collection of independent content they have previously hosted on their service.
