Attention: The following discussion includes plot details from The Rookie season 7 finale. The series concluded with an episode that leaves many unanswered questions for its next return. For the first time since the jailbreak, Oscar abducts Nolan, compelling him to assist in locating a stash of diamonds he had stolen years ago. Fortunately, Nolan is rescued by Nyla (alongside a remarkably skilled young drone operator) at the last possible moment. As usual with Oscar, he manages to slip away, ensuring that the villain remains at large within The Rookie’s fictional world.
He’s not just one potential danger for the Mid-Wilshire team, as Monica has a deal with the FBI that could pose threats now. However, some viewers might have been taken aback by the ambiguous ending of Chenford’s storyline. Throughout Season 7, there has been a gradual development towards their romantic reunion, with Tim asking Lucy to move in together in “The Good, The Bad, and The Oscar.” But their progress is halted when Tim discovers that she dozed off during his speech, leaving them on the brink of reconciliation but not quite there yet.
After watching the thrilling finale, I had a chance to chat with showrunner Alexi Hawley regarding the unexpected reappearance of major villains, the poignant last scene between Tim and Lucy, and sneak peeks on what fans can anticipate when The Rookie returns for season 8. (First-person perspective: As a dedicated fan, I was thrilled to catch up with showrunner Alexi Hawley…)
Monica’s Immunity Will Be A Source Of Frustration In Season 8
“It’s enraging and many other things to our cops who have been trying to get her a for a full season now.”
ScreenRant: Monica has an immunity deal. Is she an immediate danger to anyone in the LAPD?
Alexi Hawley: I’m not entirely sure about that, but I can say it’s infuriating for those officers who have been pursuing her throughout an entire season. It’s extremely aggravating that she’s now immune to consequences due to her past crimes.
It’s clear Bridget dominated the situation, her exit was fantastic, and everything about it was impressive. As we move into season eight, anticipation builds around the tension of her getting away with it all, and there’s potential for exploring the details of her immunity deal that could provide interesting storylines – aspects we’re currently pondering in the writers’ room.
Is there anything else significant we should know regarding the classified data Monica obtained, or was it merely intended to motivate her comeback?
Alexi Hawley: In a nod to the “Speed” episode, the stolen ID card found on the bus was instrumental in granting access to the Intelligence Community’s databases, which eventually led to obtaining that vital information. However, it remains uncertain how much more we will uncover about this in season 8, as of now.
Tim And Lucy Have Officially Turned A Corner
“You leave that episode knowing where it’s going to go. I think you feel very positive about it.”
In simpler terms, weren’t fans anticipating that Tim and Lucy would reunite at the end? Can you explain why you chose not to continue their relationship in the final episode?
Alexi Hawley: In the end, you can tell where this story is headed and it leaves you with a sense of optimism. It’s evident that Tim has put in the effort. However, Lucy and Tim still need to discuss it further. Throughout our series, it’s been shown that open communication isn’t always their forte, but they seem to be improving. They appear to be moving towards better times. To put it simply, it was amusing, but things are looking up. In other words, they’re on the right track.
Will there be more hints about the potential relationship in season 8, or will we finally get a clear response concerning Tim’s query?
As a movie enthusiast, I’m thoroughly impressed by the direction Chenford’s season has taken us this year. It’s been a rollercoaster ride for fans, mirroring our own emotional journey as we grappled with the consequences of Tim’s actions, not just on others but also on him, and his struggle to understand why he made those choices. The storyline beautifully portrayed Lucy’s journey towards forgiveness, making us feel deeply invested in their characters and the narrative unfolding.
This narrative didn’t seem to follow the pattern of resolving issues quickly over just three episodes. Instead, it feels like we’ve reached the culmination of this particular journey. The ending is quite heartwarming, and there are no hidden cliffhangers. We’re moving forward in a positive direction.
Given that Lucy has been promoted to the rank of sergeant, I’m intrigued as to how this affects her undercover assignments. Is it no longer an option, or is there potential for her to engage in such work in the future?
From the perspective of a devoted cinephile, I wholeheartedly believe she’s got what it takes for more covert operations. That avenue hasn’t been ruled out yet. In the eighth season, while deep-cover assignments might not kick off right away, I’m optimistic that we’ll witness her undercover exploits in some intriguing fashion during the new season. After all, the writers always manage to surprise us with their innovative approaches.
We’ve spun several undercover narratives, including those involving her and Harper, among others. It can be tempting to slip into a repetitive narrative structure like, “Will she get caught? Won’t she?” Instead, our focus is on finding new sources of tension and innovative storytelling methods, which is what we are currently brainstorming in the room.
The Season 7 Finale Isn’t The Last We’ve Seen Of Oscar
“What is the next chapter of Oscar’s journey in season 8, and where does it go?”
Why did you choose to let Oscar continue his escapes in the world of The Rookie? Was there something specific that motivated you to keep this villain on the loose?
Alexi Hawley: Matthew is exceptionally talented, and it’s a situation we’ve encountered several times throughout the series. You create a character intended as a single appearance, but then you find an actor who excels in the role, making you think, “I’d love to work with them again.
we’ll see Oscar again.
On one of the most disastrous first dates ever recorded, Miles was framed by the Eastern Front. The authorities apprehended everyone present at the scene, yet there’s a chance that others may have been involved as well.
Alexi Hawley: It’s possible, but I haven’t given it much thought. At the moment, I don’t have a definitive answer for that question. However, handling the aftermath of the Del Monte incident, which included their attempted blackmail, turned out to be an engaging way to deal with the situation.
As a cinephile, let me share an insight from ‘Tim’: Avoid flaunting your occupation as a police officer on dating profiles because people harbor strong feelings towards cops. It’s a subtle yet impactful statement. I can’t say for certain if it needs to be expanded upon, but our show certainly portrays its fair share of questionable officers in Los Angeles. We’ll see where this goes.
