There’s plenty to look forward to in the upcoming film “Avengers: Doomsday>”. The Russo Brothers are back, marking the conclusion of the Multiverse saga, and most significantly, Robert Downey Jr. is rejoining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Last year at SDCC, it was revealed that Downey Jr. would be portraying the iconic Marvel Comics villain, Doctor Doom. Known for their discretion on major projects, the secrecy surrounding Downey Jr.’s new role feels even more intense. Despite Downey Jr. staying mum about his character, the Russos have hinted at the meticulous preparations the Oscar-winning actor has undertaken to play Doom.
In an interview with ET Online, when asked about Robert Downey Jr.’s preparation for playing Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday, Joe Russo commented, “It’s quite demanding.” He explained that despite not being categorized as a ‘method actor’, Downey Jr. is deeply engaged in the character development process. The Russos further shared that Doctor Doom is no exception to this approach, with Joe Russo adding, “The preparation for Doctor Doom is intense.
He’s deeply engrossed; he’s focused like never before. This morning, we spoke, and he was brainstorming about backstory, costume concepts – clearly, he adores intricate, multi-layered characters. I believe he sees a wealth of potential in this character.
Despite Robert Downey Jr.’s silence about portraying Doctor Doom since its announcement at last year’s San Diego Comic-Con, he has subtly hinted at his role to fans as the release date of Avengers: Doomsday, set for May 1, 2026, approaches. On this Valentine’s Day, Downey Jr. posted a Doctor Doom-themed Valentine’s card on social media with the phrase “Victor Von Valentine” – a nod to Doctor Doom’s real name, Victor Von Doom.
How Will Robert Downey Jr. Return to the MCU?
Despite the anticipation surrounding Robert Downey Jr.’s return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it has left some fans puzzled. With a new villain sporting the same visage as one of Earth’s most cherished heroes, how will the Avengers respond? The concept of the Multiverse and endless timelines provides several possibilities for Downey Jr.’s return as a distinct character. The most popular theory circulating online is that Downey Jr. won’t portray the sole version of Victor Von Doom, and another actor will embody the mainline version of the character in “Doomsday.
This hypothesis aligns with the possibility that The Fantastic Four, set to debut in the MCU for the first time in “Fantastic Four: First Steps” (releasing July 25, 2025), could play a significant part in “Avengers: Doomsday”. It’s been confirmed that “First Steps” takes place in a different, retro-futuristic universe, and it’s anticipated that the characters will migrate to Earth-616 (the main MCU universe) by the end of the film. Since they’re traveling across universes, there’s speculation that they could inadvertently bring Doctor Doom along, thereby initiating “Avengers: Doomsday”. However, it’s important to note that this is just a theory and nothing has been officially confirmed by Marvel Studios yet.
