Exploring the archives of the renowned artist, Akira Toriyama, reveals his initial character designs for the Saiyans in the original Dragon Ball Z series.
According to the website, the idea for the accompanying image was created for an initial episode of the Dragon Ball Z animated series. The Saiyans’ appearances were inspired by a sketch of Toriyama’s that had been recently unveiled, which was initially published in 1989. The site’s caption explains that the anime portrays these characters who are fond of battle, with their designs based on Toriyama’s character concept art. You can see the official image below.
Rare Dragon Ball Z Anime Sketch Highlights Original Saiyan Design
Toriyama’s concept art depicts three Saiyan characters from the “Goku’s Ancestors” episode of Dragon Ball Z, which aired on Sept. 20, 1989. Toriyama’s simple black and white sketches vividly captured the ancestral Saiyans, and these designs were accurately used by the show’s animators for the episode. The storyline follows King Kai narrating to Goku about their history before they were on the brink of extinction.
The episode additionally delves into the 10-year-long struggle known as the Saiyan-Tuffle War, where these two factions battled over control of Planet Plant. In the end, the Saiyans triumphed and annihilated the Tuffles, an advanced yet peaceful race with superior technology. It is believed that the Saiyans, tired of their simple existence in contrast to the Tuffles, initiated the war for the planet’s resources.
In peaceful times too, Saiyans from Universe 6 are depicted as a warrior race striving for supremacy across the universe. Contrastingly, Saiyans from Universe 7 are often shown as guardians and peacekeepers. Frieza managed to exterminate almost all Saiyans from Universe 7 prior to the storyline of Dragon Ball.
Delving into captivating episodes such as “Goku’s Ancestors” has been an absolute thrill! These tales not only underscore the rich history of the Saiyan race, but they also set the stage for characters who played pivotal roles in the series later on. It was a game-changer when we discovered that our beloved Goku was actually a Saiyan destined to subjugate Earth. Fortunately for us, young Goku endured a head injury, shaping him into a peaceful warrior instead of the conqueror he was meant to be, eventually earning him the title of the iconic Dragon Ball franchise’s hero!
Since Toriyama initially designed Saiyans for Dragon Ball in 1989, the Saiyan tales within the series have persisted to the present day, spanning over three decades. After a nearly year-long break that concluded in February, this marked a significant event in the franchise’s history. It is believed that Dragon Ball Super Chapter 104 represents the first installment of the series solely created by Toyotarou, following Toriyama’s passing on March 1, 2024, at the age of 68. This signifies Toyotarou taking over as the main artist for the series.
You can find the anime adaptation of “Dragon Ball Z” streaming online on Crunchyroll. Meanwhile, both the “Dragon Ball” and “Dragon Ball Super” comic series have been officially translated into English by VIZ Media.
