Drake has ended his legal battle with iHeartMedia. The well-known Toronto rapper reached a settlement with iHeartMedia following the submission of a court petition.
The ongoing petition continues to implicate Universal Music Group (UMG), which is Drake’s record label, in questionable business practices. According to the artist, UMG exploited “unusual and inappropriate” methods to boost the radio play of Kendrick Lamar’s song “Not Like Us.” Both Lamar and Drake are under contract with UMG. It is alleged that UMG made additional payments, referred to as payola, to iHeartMedia for this enhanced airtime.
The petition further accuses UMG of knowing that the song, along with its album artwork and music video, slandered another one of their artists, Drake, by falsely accusing him of being a sexual predator, engaging in pedophilia, harboring sex offenders, and committing other criminal sexual acts. The petition states that the song labels Drake as a “certified pedophile,” a “predator,” and someone who should have his name registered and monitored by neighborhood watch groups.
Drake’s lawyers stated that they are happy both parties came to an agreement in the iHeartMedia settlement, and won’t comment further on this topic. However, it’s important to note that the Federal Communications Commission is examining iHeartMedia for a separate set of payola accusations. Drake has been involved in several legal disputes with Kendrick in their rap feud, even though Kendrick isn’t directly named as a defendant. In this lawsuit, Drake alleges that Universal Music Group (UMG) intentionally portrayed him as an outcast to be bullied or worse. The suit argues, “UMG might present this lawsuit as a legal extension of their rap feud, but it’s actually a case against UMG, the company that knowingly disseminated false and harmful claims.
