Among the best comic book movie adaptations ever is set to arrive at Max in the coming month. Not only does it excel in the world of comic book films, but it also receives high praise for its action sequences. Originally released in 2012, this film masterfully adapts the 2000 AD series of comic books and the dystopian escapades of Judge Dredd, portraying the tough law enforcement officer as he faces off against a wave of criminals. This occurs after he and his rookie partner are trapped within one of Mega-City One’s most notorious housing blocks.
Under the guidance of director Pete Travis (best known for his work on “28 Days Later” and “Civil War”) who also handled a significant portion of the directing duties for “Dredd”, Alex Garland, the screenwriter, brings us this film. Starring Karl Urban as Judge Dredd, joined by Olivia Thirlby, Lena Headey, Domnhall Gleeson, Wood Harris, and Langley Kirkwood. The movie is set to release on February 1st, and you can find the official synopsis for this highly anticipated comic book action adventure below.
In the colossal, lawless city known as Mega City One, criminals hold power over the bustling streets. The sole enforcers of justice are ‘judges,’ who combine the roles of judge, jury, and executioner. Among these tough cops is Dredd (Karl Urban), a feared figure in the metropolis. On one occasion, Dredd teams up with Cassandra (Olivia Thirlby), a rookie cop possessing remarkable psychic abilities. A distress call regarding a heinous crime leads them to a hazardous district ruled by Ma-Ma (Lena Headey), a ruthless drug lord who will go to great lengths to protect her empire.
Will Karl Urban’s Dredd Ever Return in a Sequel?
Upon its debut, the film “Dredd” received numerous positive reviews, earning an 80% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics appreciated its intense action scenes and spectacular visual effects, as well as its ability to maintain the raw essence of its original material. Regrettably, these accolades did not translate into significant box office success; the film managed only $41 million in earnings, while its production budget was estimated at between $30-45 million. Despite this, a devoted fan base has emerged, expressing hope that we might revisit this interpretation of Mega-City One. Over the years, discussions about a direct sequel to “Dredd” have come and gone, with Karl Urban himself disclosing to MovieWeb in 2014 that a prequel had also been contemplated at one point.
Indeed, there’s a strong chance for that scenario. However, it seems more plausible that we’ll delve into the origins tale, where Dredd navigates the desolate Earth to locate the initial Chief Judge Fargo.
Discussion about a spin-off for the TV series has been had, with the most recent news about potential continuations emerging in 2023. During this time, Jason Kingsley, CEO of Rebellion (the company that owns the Dredd IP), mentioned that a rights issue and ongoing negotiations have been causing delays for any sequel. Since then, whispers have suggested that plans for a sequel may no longer be in motion. With Karl Urban’s success in the Amazon Prime superhero series The Boys and his role as Johnny Cage in the upcoming Mortal Kombat 2 video game adaptation, it appears that the possibility of a follow-up has become less likely.
