As a follower who vividly remembers the days of wild parties and bongo-playing with Matthew McConaughey, I must say it’s always delightful to have these memories resurface. The man sure knows how to make an impression! From his arrest for playing bongos naked to starring alongside me in “Boys on the Side,” it seems that our paths were destined for a bit of chaos and fun.

Recently, the world was once again made aware of Matthew McConaughey’s legendary bongo-playing parties during a segment called “Drew’s News” on . It’s always fun to revisit such quirky memories and let others share their recollections as well – like when McConaughey humorously recounted his arrest for playing bongos in the nude, an incident that Barrymore had previously mentioned.

In the 1995 film “Boys on the Side,” Barrymore acted alongside an Academy Award-winning actor, and during a conversation about him on her radio show on Monday, she reminisced about their time together. The previous “Scream” actress enthusiastically shared her memories of McConaughey.

As a cinephile, I’ve always had a soft spot for Matthew McConaughey. Fun fact: we actually collaborated on a film named “Boys on the Side” way back when. And let me tell you, during our downtime, he was quite the character – he’d whip up tequila parties with his bongo drums!

On her show, this topic has been addressed before, as some might remember Barrymore talking about those bongo parties a few years back. Specifically, during a 2021 episode of her show, while chatting with McConaughey via video call, she mentioned how Barrymore often played the bongos when they weren’t filming, to which he responded by acknowledging this.

Yes I played bongos long before I got arrested for playing bongos.

McConaughey’s anecdote he mentioned refers back to an event he detailed in his memoir, “Greenlights“. This incident showcases how a simple act like playing bongos escalated into him being apprehended for causing a public disturbance, which people seem to enjoy reminding themselves of occasionally.

Why Did Matthew McConaughey Get Arrested?

Back in 1999, McConaughey shares that an unusual incident took place at his residence. He chose to strip down, open all his windows wide, and indulge in smoking marijuana. Typically, such actions might have gone unnoticed, but on this particular day, the Dallas Buyers Club actor decided to create a rhythm using his bongos for the entire neighborhood to groove along. McConaughey himself referred to it as a spontaneous “jam session,” with the captivating African tunes of Henri Dikongué filling his home speakers.

Matters deteriorated rapidly, taking an unexpected twist when actor McConaughey was abruptly tackled to the ground by an Austin police officer. This is how he described the incident in his writing.

It turns out that as I was immersed in my happiness, not aware of it, two Austin police officers suddenly entered my home without warning, overpowered me using batons, handcuffed me, and forced me to lie on the floor.

As a movie lover, I can’t help but chuckle when I recall the time my favorite actor was fined for creating a ruckus, and it all started when his hometown was swamped with T-shirts emblazoned with “BONGO NAKED.” To put it mildly, this event seems to have been an isolated incident, as there haven’t been any follow-up incidents of notable naked bongo playing, at least none that led to McConaughey’s arrest. It appears that some experiences are best had once in a lifetime!
