Drew Carey ‘Mainly Didn’t Want To Get The Show Canceled’ When He Signed On For The Price Is Right, But How Long Does He Expect To Host?

For almost two decades, Drew Carey has been synonymous with one of the most popular television game shows. When he initially assumed hosting duties for The Price is Right, replacing the legendary Bob Barker, he wasn’t primarily focused on setting records or creating an enduring legacy. Instead, his primary worry was ensuring that he didn’t inadvertently lead to the cancellation of this classic series. With success in that regard, as a former cast member of Whose Line Is It Anyway?, Drew has shared his thoughts on how long he intends to continue hosting one of daytime television’s longest-running mainstays.

Reflecting on his journey as a game show host for over a decade with shows like Plinko, Carey shared with Us Weekly his early apprehensions when he first took on the role in 2007. Explaining it himself, the comedian conveyed:

“When I first started hosting, I had some initial worries I needed to quiet down.

Initially, I found myself treading cautiously, fearful of potentially jeopardizing this long-standing television phenomenon. However, as time passed and I settled into the role, it began to feel like my creation rather than simply maintaining someone else’s vision.

It’s clear that Drew Carey didn’t transform from a timid newbie to a self-assured emcee in a day. Rather, after almost twenty years of him gripping the microphone, The Price Is Right seems as much his domain as it once was Barker’s. Having spent more time hosting than any other current game show personality, Drew Carey now bears the title previously held by Pat Sajak before his retirement from Wheel Of Fortune.

For how much longer do you think Drew Carey intends to remain at that well-known podium? Truth be told, he doesn’t seem to have any immediate plans to move from where he is now. He went on to say…

Currently, I’m eager to keep on doing this indefinitely, as long as my mind and body are fit for the task. It’s simply a blast! The income is appealing, but it’s the job itself that’s amazing. Instead of having to go to work, I get to show up – what a pleasure! It feels like an honor and a privilege to be here. Let’s see how long I can maintain this enthusiasm.

It’s clear he relishes his role as host for The Price Is Right. This isn’t just about earning a paycheck; it’s an opportunity he genuinely cherishes. Frankly, who wouldn’t want such a job? After all, what could be more satisfying than distributing life-altering prizes while basking in the excitement of enthusiastic contestants? And let’s not forget the fun of repeatedly saying “Come on down!” every day.

Back in 2007, I must admit I shared the doubts of some fans about whether Carey could truly step into Barker’s shoes, given how deeply entwined the latter had become with the show over decades. However, as time passed, this bespectacled comedian has undeniably left his mark on the series. He’s managed to breathe new life and contemporary charm into it, all while preserving that familiar, comforting warmth that’s always made it a beloved sanctuary for children confined at home due to illness. Now, with over 9,000 episodes under our belts, I can confidently say that his tenure has been nothing short of remarkable.

Since its initial airing in 1956 and subsequent revival in 1972, the popular game show has cycled through various hosts, but Carey has been at the forefront longer than most may think. By 2024, he will have hosted for 17 years—slightly more than half of Barker’s iconic 35-year tenure. Given his energy and drive, it seems plausible that he could continue hosting for another 17 years or so.

At present, contestants are welcome to continue joining, and viewers can relax knowing that Drew Carey remains far from shutting the doors of Contestant’s Row for now. The 53rd season is currently being shown as part of the 2025 television lineup. The show airs weekdays between 11 AM to 12 PM Eastern Time, and 10 AM to 11 AM Pacific Time. You can catch it on CBS, or stream it anytime with a Paramount+ subscription.
