Drew Starkey Says Recording ADR for ‘Queer’ Sex Scenes Made Him Feel “Like You’re in an Insane Asylum”

As a fan who has followed Drew Starkey‘s career from the start, I must say his journey has been nothing short of captivating. The way he navigates through the intricacies of the film industry is truly inspiring. His experience with Luca Guadagnino’s Queer sounds like a rollercoaster ride, going from the intimate scenes on set to the solo ADR sessions in a booth that feels like an insane asylum!

Drew Starkey mentioned that going to the recording studio for Luca Guadagnino’s movie titled “Queer” was slightly uncomfortable.

Reflecting back on that memorable time, I shared a moment with my fellow cast member Omar Apollo during an interview for Interview magazine. We reminisced about the Automated Dialogue Replacement sessions we had during post-production of the film ‘Queer’, directed by Luca Guadagnino, which is his rendition of William S. Burroughs’ 1985 novel of the same name. In this captivating production set in 1940s Mexico, I share the central relationship with Daniel Craig. During our chat, Omar expressed to me, “I know you had some incredibly intimate scenes to film.”

“Starkey commented that the ADR process is enjoyable. He described it as requiring effort, heavy breathing, and moaning. When you’re isolated in a booth, engaged in this, it feels like being in a mental institution,” said Starkey.

This past week, A24 purchased the rights to the movie. During the subsequent interview, Starkey informed Apollo that he had only recently watched the film for the first time.

Occasionally, you might labor on something with a clear picture in your mind, only for it to undergo editing and post-production, and then you realize, “Oh dear, this isn’t at all what I had imagined.” However, Luca did a commendable job explaining the feel and structure of the final product. As a result, the end result was closer to my mental image, which was quite satisfying.

In another part of the conversation, Starkey discussed how the Netflix series “Outer Banks” significantly impacted his acting career. Starkey portrays Rafe Cameron in this show that premiered its initial season while we were all experiencing COVID-19.

“Starkey stated that everyone was in a state of lockdown, he and his group didn’t meet those who had witnessed their work until two years later. This gradual introduction to public scrutiny was beneficial for them.”

Earlier this week, Netflix revealed the trailer for season four of “Outer Banks,” bringing back character Starkey along with actors Chase Stokes, Madelyn Cline, Madison Bailey, Jonathan Daviss, Rudy Pankow, Carlacia Grant, and Austin North.
