Dropping Zorah Magdaros Quests Was Monster Hunter Wilds’ Best Move Yet

Monster Hunter Wilds’ lack of Siege Quests makes the game much better… for now.

Speaking from my experience, having played it since its debut, I’m grateful we don’t encounter the drawn-out and laborious events that often slowed down the initial release of Monster Hunter World, making it feel quite challenging at times.

The Lack of Zorah Magdaros Helped

Ditching the Zorah Magdaros quest from Monster Hunter Worlds was definitely a wise decision. I’m tired of spending 30-40 minutes reloading cannons and ballistas, only to watch a massive, plodding monster shamble towards me. I want action! I want to engage in combat with a beast, not clamber onto its back and count down until the Admiral shouts “Dragonator!” instead.

In the game, Wilds’ storyline benefits from Zorah’s absence. Starting the game, you’re ready to dive right in without having to endure tedious siege missions repeated multiple times. I can still recall the anxiety I felt during the Zorah battle in World, especially when I had to redo the entire process to obtain a specific part, only for another shot at it.

Jin Dahaad Isn’t a Siege Quest

Many players often confuse Jin Dahaad’s fight in Monster Hunter Wilds with a siege quest; however, it’s simply a massive monster battle that includes some distinctive mechanics. Yes, it does possess a powerful Nova attack that can easily wipe out your team, but it’s significantly less punishing than fighting Alatreon, where even to succeed, you must surpass an elemental DPS check.

In simpler terms, just like Jin Dahaad, there’s no instant-loss mechanism in this game. If a player is knocked down by the Nova, it only results in a single faint, not a complete team wipeout.

Thank God Rampage Isn’t Around

If you’ve played Monster Hunter Rise, you might recall the intense fatigue that came with participating in Rampage quests. Although they aren’t officially classified as siege quests, in essence, they certainly felt like one. A constant barrage of monsters attacking Kamura Village made it seem like a real siege. To me, regardless of others’ opinions, this game mode was poorly designed and didn’t suit Monster Hunter well.

It felt too arcade-y and lacked any real challenge or satisfaction.

How Will Lagiacrus Fare?

With Zoh Shia now in charge of the meta weapon supply, Lagiacrus is gearing up for some major changes in Title Update 2. We can expect an epic boss battle, probably comparable to the battles against Zoh Shia and Jin Dahaad. The intrigue lies in whether this upcoming fight will be a siege-like quest similar to Alatreon or Kulve Taroth, or simply another intense battle like the one with Jin Dahaad.

In numerous ways, Capcom can design the Lagiacrus battle, but it doesn’t necessarily require underwater combat to excel. Instead, it should focus on being smooth and immersive. Keep in mind, Monster Hunter Rise is gearing up to be the most polished installment in the series thus far.

I’d prefer if Lagiacrus becomes a siege quest, but not the repetitive, worn-out type we experienced with Zorah Magdaros. Instead, I look forward to something fresh and exciting, regardless!
