Duffer Brothers' New Sci-Fi Series Is 'Groundbreaking' Says Alfre Woodard

As a seasoned film enthusiast who’s had the pleasure of witnessing some truly remarkable cinematic journeys, I must say that Alfre Woodard‘s career trajectory is nothing short of mesmerizing. From her electrifying performances in films like “Crooklyn” and “Miss Evers’ Boys,” to her recent foray into the supernatural realm with “Salem’s Lot,” she continues to captivate audiences with her raw talent and unparalleled versatility.

We recently interviewed Alfre Woodard during the premiere of the latest adaptation of Stephen King’s famous vampire novel, “Salem’s Lot”. It’s an exhilarating ride, and Woodard has been quite occupied with other significant projects lately. Notably, she is appearing in an upcoming Netflix sci-fi series titled “The Boroughs”, which the Duffer brothers are producing. They are known for their work on “Stranger Things” and the show was developed by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews. Woodard will be sharing the screen with another seasoned actor, Bill Pullman. Interestingly enough, this marks her second collaboration, as Bill’s son Lewis also stars in “Salem’s Lot” alongside Woodard.

Woodard shared with MovieWeb that The Boroughs could be revolutionary. “I said to Bill, who I’ve known for a long time,” Woodard explained during our first rehearsal and table read, “Lewis is just extraordinary… He’s not only an exceptionally talented actor with a relaxed, natural style reminiscent of Bill, but what sets him apart is his ability to make everyone feel like they’re the only one. He’s such a considerate and generous individual, and he’s simply captivating.” I added, “That’s the key. He’s already a big star, but he’ll reach even greater heights… However, he’s a genuinely good person, which undeniably contributes to his exceptional acting skills.

On the ‘Greedy’ Nature of Vampires

Meanwhile, Woodard is depicted fighting off vampires in “Salem’s Lot,” and during our conversation, she shared an unexpected reason for her intense dislike of these creatures.

Vampires are undoubtedly the creatures I dislike most among the fearsome beings or spirits or whatever I might encounter, because they seem to me like self-absorbed and materialistic humans. They return even more selfish than before, which makes them less frightening in a way, as it’s more their desire for human blood that I find disturbing. It’s not about wanting a nice piece of fish or anything; they want to drain your life force. Frankly, it’s like they crave what you can never give up, and it’s hard not to compare them to the many greedy individuals we encounter in our daily lives.

In the film “Salem’s Lot“, Woodard and Gary Dauberman worked together for the second time. Previously, Dauberman was the writer of “Annabelle” (2014), where Woodard also starred. When discussing their experience making “Salem’s Lot“, Woodard stated it felt like having an older brother, despite his being her junior.

In a casual setting, Woodard shared that she often improvised and experimented with ideas. She recounted how he would respond to her suggestions with enthusiasm, like, “Sure, I’ll give that a shot.” What stood out was the strong bond they shared, which is one of the reasons she decided to collaborate with him. Additionally, she appreciated his versatile talents as a writer, director, and executive producer, making the project all the more enticing because it promised a well-crafted film that left her wanting more once it concluded.

Salem’s Lot is now streaming on Max. You can watch it through the link here.
