Last year’s release of Denis Villenueve’s epic blockbuster sequel, Dune: Part Two, met widespread critical and audience acclaim along with overwhelming box-office returns. But the famed director isn’t finished with Frank Herbert’s classic sci-fi universe just yet. He is already developing his highly-anticipated film-trilogy finale: Dune: Messiah.
Despite there being six books in the main series, Villeneuve doesn’t intend to make any more Dune movies beyond this upcoming threequel. Regardless, his films have brought Herbert’s original characters and story to life in a way that hasn’t been accomplished before in theaters, so it’s no wonder die-hard fans are already itching for more. Here’s everything we know so far about his third, and final, installment, Dune: Messiah — from production updates to the expected plot — so everyone can get just as excited as we are to see Paul Atreides’ character arc brought to a satisfying end.
‘Dune: Messiah’ Release Timeline
Dune: Messiah’s release schedule has yet to be confirmed, and conflicting reports are making its production timeline unclear. Initially, Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures refrained from even verifying that the film is the next movie Villeneuve is going to make for them. They did set a Dec. 18, 2026 release date for the writer-director’s next “event film” back in June 2024, but he also has Nuclear War, Cleopatra, and Rendezvous with Rama lined up.
However, with Dune: Part Two’s massive success, it’s hard to believe the threequel won’t be a top priority for the studios, and Villeneuve recently admitted that Dune: Messiah is his primary focus right now. During a press Q&A at the Saturn Awards, the director gave the film an exciting update: “I was expecting to do something else before, but frankly, that’s the inspiration that came to my mind as I took a break this summer and was going back and finishing the story. I was really moved by the way Part Two was received by cinephiles around the world, and I felt an appetite and a desire to see more, and a responsibility to finish that story.” So, it looks like his other movies are the ones now on hold.
Likewise, recent reports indicate that production has been moved up to a summer 2025 start instead of in 2026 as Villeneuve initially planned. This likely confirms the late 2026 premiere, but script and scheduling issues could still arise and push that timeline back. It is, after all, a huge production with a lot of moving parts. It makes sense that its filmmakers are hesitant to announce an official release date until they are sure of it, but it’s comforting to know that Dune: Messiah will likely come out much sooner than we thought.
The Cast & Crew Returning for ‘Dune: Messiah’
Along with Villeneuve as writer and director, plenty of other notable collaborators will likely return as well. Jon Spaihts (Doctor Strange) may be coming back as co-writer (though his involvement is still up in the air), and fans can expect to hear composer Hans Zimmer again in the musical score. However, the production must work around a lot of schedules, so some crew may be replaced for the third installment. For example, cinematographer Greig Fraser will be working on The Batman: Part II, which could prevent him from coming back to the Dune franchise.
When it comes to the cast, it looks like all the major characters will return, along with their respective actors. That includes: Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides, Anya Taylor-Joy as Alia Atreides, Zendaya as Chani, Javier Bardem as Stilgar, and Charlotte Rampling as Gaius Helen Mohiam. However, without any confirmations yet, as well as a reported 12-year gap between Dune: Part Two and Dune: Messiah, some roles may be recast. Honestly, considering the big names directly tied to the success of the first two installments, any replacements on-screen seem doubtful. Though we may see some of them aged up to reflect the time jump.
Additionally, there are plenty of smaller roles mentioned in the book that fans should look out for. Lady Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson), Gurney Halleck (Josh Brolin) and Shaddam IV (Christopher Walken) are all mentioned in the Dune: Messiah novel. Plus, Jason Momoa’s character Duncan Idaho, a genetically engineered human (a ghola), plays a large part in the book, so we could see him more in the third movie.
What Story Can Fans Expect in ‘Dune: Messiah’?
Little has been confirmed about Dune: Messiah’s story. So far, fans only have the book to go by. Considering both Dune and Dune: Part Two stuck incredibly close to their source material, Villeneuve will likely do the same for his next film. Thus, we’ll see Paul Atreides 12 years into his Imperial rule, after conquering most of the galaxy, with the religion he encouraged having killed 61 billion people — establishing a looming legacy.
However, there are plenty of changes Villeneuve made while adapting the books for the screen that will have major plot repercussions in the final installment. For example, Chani leaves Paul and his followers behind before heading into the Arrakis’ desert following his ascension to the Imperial throne and the beginning of a holy war. In contrast, the book sees Chani enduring by Paul’s side regardless of his drastic transformation. How the director plans on addressing this major divergence from the original story is currently unclear (though he’s very clear about not sharing his plans before the film’s release).
In the end, fans will just have to trust Villeneuve’s ability to make his final Dune film the masterpiece they want. Since he’s proven capable thus far, no incredible leaps of faith seem necessary. Also, just because Dune: Messiah is the last movie helmed by Villeneuve, that doesn’t mean it will be the final one in the entire franchise. Plus, there are still plenty of offshoots to get into now, including the prequel series, Dune: Prophecy, and the MMO video game, Dune: Awakening, which arrives May 20 of this year.
