As a longtime fan of the Dune universe, I must say that this latest installment, Dune: Prophecy, has been quite a rollercoaster ride! The revelation about Desmond Hart’s lineage is truly shocking and adds an exciting twist to the storyline.
In the heart-pounding penultimate episode of “Dune: Prophecy,” I found myself stunned by a jaw-dropping revelation that sets the stage for an unforgettable finale. As a devoted movie critic, I’ve been following this captivating spin-off from Denis Villeneuve’s Dune and its upcoming sequel, which delves into the fascinating origins of the Bene Gesserit and their clandestine control over the Imperium.
The episode also reveals Valya’s attempts to undermine Desmond’s influence over Emperor Javicco Corrino (Mark Strong) as it sabotages the Bene Gesserit’s plans for the Imperium. The Sisterhood’s fall from grace in terms of influence over Corrino creates instability in the Mother Superior’s eyes, and the assassination attempt on Desmond fails, motivating him to come back with a vengeance unlike any other. The chaos doesn’t stop there, as Valya is in for another rude awakening from her sister Tula Harkonnen (Olivia Williams) because she might be Desmond’s mother and the one who crossed the bloodlines.
Desmond Hart Is of Atreides and Harkonnen Descent
In episode 5 of Dune: Prophecy, Dune fans experienced a significant surprise when it was disclosed that Desmond Hart shares ancestry with both Kieran Atreides and the Harkonnen sisters. This shocking revelation emerged from a blood sample obtained by Valya in episode 4, which Tula later analyzed to uncover Desmond’s origins. These origins pose a threat to the Sisterhood as they work to control the politics of the Imperium, given that his presence disrupts their manipulations. Moreover, Desmond possesses an unknown power and adds salt to old wounds by reuniting House Atreides and House Harkonnen, but most importantly, is a descendant of Vorian Atreides, whom Valya deeply loathes for his part in her family’s downfall.
In the upcoming film “Dune: Part Two,” it seems Desmond could be the offspring of Tula and Orry Atreides. This revelation will lead Valya to confront the most profound act of treachery. Previously, viewers speculated if the union between the Harkonnens and Atreides was first in “Dune: Part Two,” but the series “Dune: Prophecy” has made it clear that these two powerful families have been intertwined for more than 10,000 years, not just through their enmity but also through family bonds. This shocking revelation sets the stage for an unforgettable conclusion.
What Does Desmond’s Quest for Revenge Mean for the Sisterhood?
In the initial episodes of the captivating six-part saga, ‘Dune’, it became evident that the character Desmond harbors a deep-seated grudge against the Sisterhood, traceable to his bitterness over his mother’s decision to join their ranks and abandon him. This episode, however, left us in suspense about Desmond’s true parentage. Yet, a glimpse into the final episode teaser presents a young woman named Tula, cradling a newborn infant. Whether Desmond is aware that Tula is his mother, who supposedly took the life of his father, remains to be seen. But once this secret is revealed, it will undoubtedly fan the flames of his resentment, escalating the danger that the Sisterhood faces significantly.
The episode provided a heart-wrenching glimpse into Desmond’s tragic past, revealing how he was forced to endure hardships after being handed over to scavengers by his own mother. A significant aspect of the Bene Gesserit order is that newborn sisters are immediately separated from their mothers to discourage emotional attachment and ensure they can fulfill their greater destiny. This rule also prevents bonds among Sisters, as such attachments could potentially sway their loyalty. The phrase “Sisterhood Above All” encapsulates this principle. Desmond finds an unexpected ally in Empress Natalya (Jodhi May), who shares his disdain for the Sisterhood’s manipulation of the Emperor, which undermines her and her council. This alliance will likely lead to further complications for the Sisterhood as the series concludes.
How Will This Storyline Wrap Up in the ‘Dune: Prophecy’ Finale?
While this shocking revelation gives Dune: Prophecy an exciting edge, it feels a bit rushed, given that the reveal came in the penultimate episode of the Max show. There’s only one episode left, and with no confirmation of a Season 2 for the series, the finale has to tie up all the loose ends to then lead into the next project of the Dune franchise. Who the confrontation against Desmond takes place remains to be seen as fans speculate he’ll go toe-to-toe with Sister Lila (Chloe Lea) thanks to the prophecy of the Reckoning, which says a tyrant “born from blood and spice,” pointing to a fight between two of Tula’s children.
Currently, it appears that the finale may speed up its pace to address the lingering questions about the identity of Desmond and how the Sisterhood will react if he turns out to be Tula’s son. The plot twists in Dune: Prophecy have been less engaging at times, but this revelation is likely to draw audiences back to witness either Desmond Hart’s fall or the Harkonnen sisters’ response. You can catch up on Dune: Prophecy by streaming it on Max.
