As a dedicated fan of Dune: Prophecy, I must say that the events of this year have left me breathless and eager for more. The season finale, “The High-Handed Enemy,” has certainly shaken things up and left us with more questions than answers – much like a sandstorm in the deserts of Arrakis!
Warning: spoilers for Dune: Prophecy Episode 6 – “The High-Handed Enemy” are in play.
Dear friends and enthusiasts alike, we’ve successfully completed Season 1 of “Dune: Prophecy”. As the year 2024 TV schedule comes to a close, viewers have witnessed an abundance of events unfold in this season finale. Given the recent developments concerning Season 2, as well as the flurry of interviews that coincided with the release of “The High-Handed Enemy”, I felt it was fitting to address some questions. With everything that transpired over the past fortnight still lingering in my mind, I find myself with unresolved queries that continue to intrigue me.
How Does Desmond’s Parentage Leave Valya And Tula’s Relationship?
It’s essential to first consider the immediate impact of Desmond’s parentage revelation on Mother Superior Valya (Emily Watson) and her sister Tula (Olivia Wiliams). During a virtual press event for the finale of Dune: Prophecy, attended by TopMob, actresses Emily Watson, Olivia Williams, and showrunner Alison Schapker shared their insights on how this sudden disclosure will alter the storyline.
Provided in edited excerpts, here’s part of what all three parties had to say:
- Emily Watson: ‘It’s blown everything up, but I think Valya is probably still holding ‘I am the chosen one, I have the destiny’ [that] is still her guide. That’s her guide through this. … I think Valya’s instinct is to run for the shadows. ‘I will stick with my mission, because that’s what keeps me alive.’
- Olivia Williams: ‘I think a huge thing for Tula is the moment when she says, “please don’t kill my son, trust me, I’ve got this.” … It’s an interesting thing though, because sometimes people of that character like to stay in the shadows, and it will be interesting to see what happens, if she is pushed further to the front and whether she can handle it.’
- Alison Schapker: ‘I also think like any secret that comes out, the longer you keep the pain around it needs to be metabolized. It makes you have to rethink your relationship – going back over the years, [thinking] “how did I miss something?”’
Based on the recent developments in the storyline, it seems that Desmond Hart’s enigmatic and intriguing character may soon cause problems for another character within the world of Dune: Prophecy. In my opinion, it’s not a question of whether, but rather a matter of when this conflict will arise.
How Will Empress Natalya React To Desmond’s Revealing Truths?
Lately, Empress Natalya Corrino (Jodhi May) and Desmond have been growing closer together. With Mr. Hart’s anti-Sisterhood/anti-tech crusade gaining momentum due to Sister Francesca’s (Tabu) renewed relationship with her husband, Natalya’s support of this cause has led to a strong connection; one that may even hint at a budding romance.
Alison Schapker, showrunner for “Dune: Prophecy,” has a remark about secrets creating tension in relationships that proves relevant to our characters. Given Desmond’s lineage with The Sisterhood and his implanted Nanobots granting him the ability to expose truth, he serves as a time bomb of contradiction towards Empress Natalya’s convictions.
What impact does Jodhi May believe the truth will have on this newly formed partnership? Upon asking her this question, she shared with TopMob the following response:
Doesn’t it raise a multitude of intriguing, thought-provoking questions? Indeed, it will undoubtedly cause her to ponder deeply on the matter.
Given Desmond Hart’s intense confrontation with Mikaela (Shalom Brune-Franklin), it appears that causing explosions is a common thread in the first season of Dune: Prophecy. Here’s hoping Empress Natalya manages to emerge from this situation unharmed as well.
There’s a wealth of details to ponder about the season finale plot of “The High-Handed Enemy,” and it’s frustrating that we have to wait for answers concerning the prophecy mysteries, along with understanding how these recent major events will shape the characters’ futures.
Simultaneously, I’m thrilled to share that there will indeed be a second season for fans to anticipate at some point down the line. If you haven’t yet watched Prophecy, and are seeking something engaging for your holiday viewing, consider subscribing to Max and diving in!
